Things aren't always black and white - but sometimes they are

I've always been a fan of simple and quick solutions to most of the problems we encounter. That's because in most cases the problems we have aren't as big as we think, and if we would more often use simple logic to try to fix what's wrong instead of constantly hoping for the best case scenario, then our life would be a lot easier.

But that mentality doesn't always resonate with other people, and I've been told many times in the past, by those I tried to help, that life is not always black and white and that things don't always go the way we want them to.

And I agree with them!

However, this "things aren't always black and white!" mentality often leads to a lot more trouble than we already have. The main reason is that the people who use that argument are usually in a situation that makes them feel sad and uncomfortable, and instead of dealing with it as fast as possible, they procrastinate because of their feelings.

Let's take as an example a person who is in a relationship and his or her partner is cheating. I've had many friends in the past who were going through something like that. The simplest and easiest solution to that problem would be to break up with that particular partner and find someone else.

But you'd be surprised how many people don't do it. It's an easy solution to a shitty problem, but a lot of people will avoid thinking about it, because it often won't lead to the outcome they desire. Feelings get in the way, and they usually don't let go of those feelings no matter what, this way suffering even more.

It doesn't mean that the solution is easy or that it will make the "cheated" person happy in the next few days, weeks or even months. But the problem itself is simple, looking from a logical point of view - the partner is cheating, the cheated person can't allow that in a relationship, so, breaking up is the best solution to avoid further unpleasant feelings and situations.

It's the same with something like losing a job you really loved. Yes, it happens, and yes, it's shitty. But there's nothing you can do about it no matter how much you complain. What to do? The logical thing - find another job. You may not like it as much, but what are you gonna do - wait for your former boss to change his mind or feel sorry for you?

Life is not often black and white, I agree. But sometimes it is. People however refuse to see it that way in a lot of situations, and they procrastinate to avoid solving a simple problem for the sake of some feelings that simply get in the way. Don't use that argument as a way to delay an outcome that may come anyway. Feelings are there with a reason, but sometimes it's better to just ignore them.

Do what's best for you, even if sometimes that means you're gonna feel sad for a while. As much as you may hate the idea, life is black and white sometimes. Your feelings may not be, but that doesn't matter. Doing what you must, instead of what you want, is the best thing to do sometimes.
