Have you ever benefited from helping others ?

When we help others, we are in fact helping ourselves the most. You know why? It is because we are giving ourselves the opportunity to gain some brownie points and raise self esteem before our own conscience.

I think I have written about this before but will write it once more so that more people read. 

Once, we went to the railway station to drop my sister in law who was going to Mumbai. There was a bus strike which was unannounced. There were so many stranded passengers in the railway station. 

An elderly man approached my husband and asked him if he could drop him near his house which was on the way to our house. My husband agreed to and also, he recognised the man as a fellow villager. The elderly man was very happy. We dropped him near his house and he thanked us profusely. He offered to pay but my husband refused it. 

Similarly, once when my husband was traveling to another town, their car was signalled to stop. An old man was having an asthma attack and his son was trying helplessly to stop a vehicle so that he could take him to the hospital. My husband stopped his van and took both him and the patient and made sure they were taken to a hospital.

Years later, 

My husband, myself and son had gone to attend a wedding in another town. Some time later, my mother in law called and said that my father in law had fits. We did not know how to get back soon as we had come along with the bridegroom's party and had left the van in the village. 

A stranger came up to us and offered to drop us in his car and also send his driver. He was the bride's uncle and we were meeting him for the first time. We were taken quickly to our house and we also paid for the fuel even though he had said not to. 

The act of kindness was a real surprise because the man who helped us did not know us at all and yet offered to take us back home, some 300 km away. 

If we help someone, it will come back to us in times of great need.
