Traditional Indian Mechanics of Grinding Spices - SIL BATTA.

in #life5 years ago

No doubt technology have given us many advantages through some unbelievable product which makes our life more easier. More so , what happens to be manual work, is now totally a technological base which different gadgets and equipments coming up in markets every other day. And humans started to keep rely on them to make their work easier. However there are something about the traditional and old aged method which still have some uniqueness.

One of such thing in India is use of SIL BATTA or say the old age method of grinding spices. Or traditional grinder. Which is not like current electronic equipment, where we just put the spices and switch on the electricity to grind the spices. In traditional approach, there is lot of manual intervention.

image

When I say manual intervention, then I mean it. As it involved manual rolling on spices through use to Stone base plate and Stone roller. This is termed as SIL BATTA specially crafted and designed on stones which helps in proper grinding of spices. If you will notices on these stone carved equipment, where the base which is carved lines on it, this lines helps in grinding the material properly. The roller which is also a stone material is use to roll on the stone plate .

The mechanics is very simple , just grind the spices and make a perfect paste of it. But the simple looking stuffs is not always simpler. The way it needed to be roles need some amount of experince too. It not an easy way to roll the spices. Only a experince hands can make it looks simpler. Put the spices (as in pic , chillies, garlic, black pepper,) on the stone plate, put a little bit of water so that the outcome is in paste form. Once you get ready, start rolling the roller on top of it, like you pressing each of the spices perfectly.

In between , make sure to keep collecting the spread out spices and putting them in centre again, before re starting the rolling technique once again. This is also important, and not a baby work, as sometime the spices get out of the Stone plate and spread on the floor. But an experince hand makes sure no to spread them on floor and only remain within the stone plate boundary line.

It is also good physical workout for many women which keep them healthy not so like modern ladies who need to visit Gym to keep themselves fit. It requires a lot of shoulder effort to roll out paste from the old dry spices . After rolling the spices for a while we will get a end result in for of paste.

After, grinding the spices and making the paste, this SIL BATTA are washed and kept seperately in a safer place. Trust me being a Stone made, these have quite heavy Home Appliances.

The main reason or belief of using ** SIL BATTA still in many Indian household is an old believe that grinding spices on stones add some extra taste to the food. May be it's true, as I do get a different taste whenever I get food made up of from spices on these Home appliance.**

I hope many knows about this old traditional home appliances. When we do not have electricity at home, then these SIL BATTA is very useful. I believe every Indian have use it once in their life. And today I thought of sharing it with every one.

Stay Calm....

Keep Steeming...Steem On !!!

A labor of love! I would have to agree that foods in general definitely taste better when you take the time to work them properly. I've never used this technique myself, but would love to try it! All those spices and flavors are so delicious!

Yes indeed....I totally agree..the more time you give...it like adding more love. Which gets better and yummy....I saw my mother doing it...also I think these are the way which make women's more fit and fine...as they have to do everything manually

That's why people never used to have to exercise! Life was active enough when you do everything by hand. :)

Each Indian family I know have recipes and methods to use spices that make a meal exceptionally tasty.

Nice learning local traditions on something used every day @steemflow thanks for sharing.

Indeed.....such is the need of these SIL BATTA that many Indian family still sticks too their root and tradition. And seriously these adds to the taste.....Steem on

By what I understand, Durban has the second largest Indian population outside of India. Many good friends have given me tips on how they prepare different dishes, recipes are really handed down from generation to generation, (I love spicy food)!

Yes..I know..South Africa is second home to many....and fore sure you definately get hold of those spicy treats 😉

Nice pics. Treating food manually always gives it a different touch.

That's true @jonsnow1983 ....a self cooked food is better than a packaged food......always have a good taste

Very interesting device. I have no idea, if its use really adds to the taste, but I would not be surprised, if it really did. I could also see, how a slower grinding process compared to that of a machine is better for the spices and preserves certain elements.

Well I did tried....and really there is slight difference than the spices available in Market. ...but glimpse of this technique you will find in Ayurveda as well, where those medicine were made out of stone only....so it's not only about kitchen home appliances but many more.
