So Many Supplements, So Little Time

I’ve got so many things to do, and here I am stuck in the vitamin aisle trying to decide whether to buy A,C,and E together to save money, or should I buy them separately and mega-dose my way through the week? The problem is, I just spent 25 minutes in the protein aisle wondering whether my hormones are going to be effected more by using the soy instead of the whey….you know, that article that came out a while back? Anyway, I still wanted to see what’s new in the natural healing aisle…and my boss doesn’t understand this as a reason for being late.

Focus on the Basics First

The reality is that if you make the effort to eat healthy foods in proper proportions and variety, you’re giving your body what it needs. The vitamin and supplement people want you to think differently, but remember, they’re not making money selling oranges so you can get your MDR of vitamin C, are they? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate good science and new information on keeping fit, but I’m inclined to think that if all the health fanatics ate properly and did their homework, the vitamin stores might be seeing fewer customers.

Spend More Time in the Blue Zones, Less Time in the ‘Next Fad’ Aisle

Blue Zones describe the regions around the world that are inhabited by concentrations of the world’s longest living people. This groundbreaking research by Dan Buettner which has been popularized by Oprah and Dr. Oz, is the best picture painted of fitness as a lifestyle. I am taking the liberty here of defining fitness as more than measurement of weight/repetitions/time, etc. The longest living people in the world have daily habits in common. Major ones include, among others, sociability, eating less, and movement in everyday activities.

Indeed, fitness is a much grander thing that doesn’t show the same in a photograph of any one person. It’s not simply your time spent elevating your heart rate on the treadmill.

And it’s not for sale as a supplement.
