The Siegessäule in Berlin
You have probably already heard of the iconic monument in the center of Berlin
This is a two part series in which we have a look at the monument and its surrounding area. While it may not be the highest monument you have ever been on, the two platforms of the Siegessäule still offer a great view of its surroundings!
One first enters into some rooms at the base in which the history of the monument is explained. An interesting fact for me was that it was actually not constructed at its current site, but rather transported from another part of the town. After its second construction they also added another column to it to make it a bit higher.
After this one reaches the first platform which you can see in the second picture. This gives a great view of the roundabout in which this monument is located. But of course one wants to go even higher and if you are up for it you are in for a lot of stairs...
Reaching the top one gets to see splendid view of Berlin (the city is quite flat, so it is possible to see quite far). One of the highways directly connects to the Brandenburg Gate. But don't be fooled, it is quite a long road to get there!
