Life lesson 1: Sometimes you have to figure out what’s more important
Back when I was deployed in Iraq (2011)
It was a slow day at work, My buddy & I was arguing over if the 3 Peat Lakers team were lead by Kobe or Shaq
My supervisor called me in his office and said
He said Private Tony,
Who avg the most points in the NBA last season?
I proudly said
“Kevin Durant, Sergeant”
He said “ What about the year before that?
I repeated “Kevin Durant Sergeant, and D Wade the year before that”
I was happy to tell him
He said “Private Tony, what’s the maximum effect range for your M4?” (My rifle)
I told him
“I’m not sure Sergeant but I know where I can find the answer”
He asked me what is the process of reporting a death of the battle field
“I’m not sure about that one either Sergeant but I know where I can find the answer”
He smirked
He looked me dead in my eye and said
Private Tony,
“You’re hella intelligent, but here you are in the middle of the war zone and don’t know shit about what’s important
You have a big ass brain filled with useless information”
That conversation changed my life forever
Imagine sitting in the middle of war zone not knowing how close you have to be to your enemy to put a bullet in his head
But you know every useless stat about the NBA
The same thing apply for real life
Who know all the scoop, gossips and drama but don’t know how to survive
Learn how to budget
Learn how to earn more
Learn how/ what to eat
Learn when to cut people off
Learn when to punish people
Learn when to reward people
Learn how to socialize with people who don’t look like you
Learn when to show empathy
Learn when to be cutthroat
Fight the fight
Knowledge isn’t zero sum
You can know about multiple things and be well rounded
But
It doesn’t work like that for Energy
Energy is a zero sum
If I spend 10 blocks of energy gossiping / complaining
I can’t spent those same blocks of energy building anything useful
You really have to monitor what you give a fuck about
