Find the most important thing and focus on it
Tandy is a greedy girl, she is full of curiosity, thirst for knowledge, want to learn everything, she built a lot of barrels, but each bucket has so little water.
When she was in college, she was majoring in physics, but she likes to join some other major classes.
After graduation, she went to experience and explore a lot of industries, even art, humanities, opera, and more.
Living a level above Tandy, is a twin brother. They love music, the difference is, the older brother like many kinds of instruments, violin, guitar, cucurbit wire ... Like to try anything. The younger brother, only love the violin for several decades, regarded the violin as his life companion and played for hours every day. They always participate in musical instruments exhibition, the older brother excitedly jump from one instrument to another instrument, know everything but not much.
The younger brother is only focused on the violin.
Tandy was inspired by the brothers, and learn violin from the younger brother. The younger brother said to Tandy: "We do not ask for quick and perfect, we first need to master the basics, then practice a few tunes, the other tunes will be very easy to learn." Although I only focus on the violin, I actually can play the piano and a variety of instruments, those that I don’t know I can learn very fast.”
He also told Tandy: "Although it will be difficult for an adult to learn violin, but it is never too late, you just have to stick to it 30 minutes a day, if you are really busy, 15 minutes is also enough, the important thing is not to stop yourself from practicing. When you can hold on for 3 years, you will be able to perform well.”
The biggest conflict is after Tandy finish practiced one music, she wants to learn the next music.
But the younger brother is always gentle and firm, if she didn’t master one music, she would need to continue to practice, practice until he thinks she can pass.
Tandy practiced violin for two years, but she can only play 3 to 4 songs. She gots tons of excuses, always busy work, busy meeting with friends...
Don’t have 15 minutes to practice the violin.
In the end, the violin was left in the corner of the room, quilt under a beautiful tablecloth.
One day, a little monkey came down the hill. It went to a cornfield, saw a field of golden corn, it felt happy, picked one and carry forward. The little monkey carried the corn and walked under a peach tree. It saw the tree full of red peaches, it then threw the corn aside for the peaches. The little monkey held a few peaches and walked to a melon field. It saw the big and round watermelon on the ground, then threw the peaches away and pick the watermelon. The little monkey went back with a big watermelon in its arms. On its way back, it saw a little rabbit jumping around. It put down the watermelon and chase the rabbit. The little rabbit ran into woods and disappeared.
The little monkey had to go home empty-handed.
"Aren't you just like the monkey?" "Tandy thinks about herself." "I have to find the core thing in my life, and concentrate all my energies on such a thing and do my best."
Fortunately, after learning a lot, tried a lot, Tandy finally found the core thing which is to help others learn and grow.
How do you find that one thing that's in your heart and then focus on it?
A few people are very fortunate to be able to find it quickly, but many people have to take some detours, even Buffett only accidentally found "The Intelligent Investor" after reading the investment books around him, and only realize that this is a life changing book.
Detours are inevitable, but they can be shortened.
