Flinders Ranges - story from the Aboriginal Adnyamathanha people.
The Flinders Ranges is the traditional home of the Aboriginal Adnyamathanha people. Evidence of their teachings and stories about the ‘Dreaming’ is present across this area. The Adnyamathanha believe that powerful ancestral beings created the natural formations in the land. The natural features of the Flinders Ranges are still of cultural significance to the Adnyamathanha people and all feature in traditional stories and legends.
In the Wadlata complex at Port Augusta you'll find the award winning "tunnel of time" Where you can find the following story.
Yuralypila
A long time ago there was a wicked old Yuraartu (woman) who used to invite her relations to her camp to kill them, because she liked eating liver. She would throw their bodies into a large and very deep waterhole nearby.
Two mates came to visit the old woman and found empty camps everywhere. They were just poking around in the water hole with a stick when they found that, surprisingly, it was only a few feet deep! It was then that they found the remains of their murdered relations!
That night the two mates planned how to avenge their relations. They made two logs look like sleeping men by tucking wallaby skin rugs around them, and waited.
They soon saw the Yuraartu creeped up to their camp, and, thinking the logs were the two men, hit them hard with a Wurru (Waddy). Now they knew for sure what had happened to their relatives. One of them rushed out and killed her. They threw her body into the waterhole and went back to tell the rest of the people everything that had happened.
