My beef with mainstream culture

in #life5 years ago

I believe everyone should be free to practice the customs they believe in. If others want to consume vapid media and spend their lives gossiping and working thanklessly for companies who treat them as disposable, that's their thing, I don't need to be bothered by it.

The thing that I find a bit unfair and would like to change is just how dominant the dominant culture is....or a variety of dominant cultures are. In some countries you have more choices than others but everywhere I've been, it isn't very common to find people who treat culture as something which they are actively contributing to. And so culture is spoon fed to them by Hollywood or by their so-called "alternative" sub-culture.

People are disempowered. They practice a culture which they had no say in creating, and assume that it's right to do so. As I said, this is fine by me, but I am looking for others to create a culture with. It's hard when people don't even have the idea that they are creating culture, but they are already doing it.

Every time they turn on the TV and tweet about some hot topic, they are giving energy to that culture which may or may not (often times is not) representative of who they are. They just don't see any viable alternatives.

So once the mainstream culture has an attitude of "join if you want to, but you don't have to", I think I really don't have anything I can say against it. Sadly though, there are people who want to maintain power over others through money or through nationalism or through some kind of idealogy which benefits them (both capitalists and so-called communists, feminists and atheists even the term anarchist is used in different ways by different people in manipulative ways). All isms are convenient tools for someone, and they usually do not have your interest in mind. They may have not started this way, but they are certainly used this way.

I want to live in a community of people who creates culture through the process of consensus. I don't care if we are capitalist or communist or whatever else, so long as we are all trying to work towards answers together. The how will work itself out if we build trust and respect each other.

You can say that I'm a dreamer but I've seen this shit in action. Don't call it impossible just because of your few negative experiences. That's the dominant culture dominating you and trying to keep you under control.

So anywhere I go, I'm an outsider. For now. One day, and it will be soon, there will be many people looking to build culture together, many kinds of culture that will build bridges between each other so we can all find the culture that best suites us, or build it together with others like us.

Sort:

Hollywood is pure evil.

They have really been defining what is good/bad, acceptable/unacceptable for a long while.

Place this on a... your home town, a tiny village where everyone knows everyone, and culture almost seems to be chiselled in stone. Where most people are afraid of change.

And in comes this force that changes the whole group, so that culture changed, and then locked into the new place. And very few even noticed.

I believe, today, that my entire outlook on Christmas was defined by watching christmas specials on TV. I feel the nostalgia i have for christmas as a child, is those shows playing. This past christmas, i tried to find the root of my feelings. I remember enjoying opening presents... but i can only remember a few presents from one single year.

So, the entire nostalgia was hollywood created.

In the future, people will be much more accepting of change. Many even relishing in it. Further, people will be coming together as "families" (something like self organizing tribes). And these families will create new cultures for themselves.

That is exactly what I want to see, and what motivates much of my work. Self organizing communities. They can believe in and practice whatever customs they want, as long as they are respectful of other tribes and members have the option to leave if they are unhappy.

I already feel this happening now, despite the resistance of old power.

I feel Hollywood is a mechanism of keeping old ideas alive and pushing new ideas in convenient directions. Directors probably have freedoms as long as they don't stray too far from the norm, or only stray in a way that allows the survival of certain narratives. I am always reminded of how our culture is shaped by the good and evil paradigm, mostly which comes from the black and white fictional stories we consume.

"Every time they turn on the TV and tweet about some hot topic, they are giving energy to that culture which may or may not (often times is not) representative of who they are."

^THIS.

I fully agree with your sentiments here, building the tribe I want to live with over the next 2 decades. Concensus is fine but experience taught me that the starting group of people already have to vibe really well together. Then magic really happens and culture is created on our own in meeting and establishing new areas of culture - unimpacted by the shady culture manipulators of the empire.

True, community is the answer to a lot of problems, but when you force a community with people who aren't on the same wavelength, sometimes it creates problems too. Best to have different tribes for different kinds of people with some members who function as ambassoders

Aye, I think this is where this whole thing is going, speaking of the steem community.
It always puts things into perspective when I see that other chains also have major problems. Makes me think maybe steem is on a decent path after all.

Speaking of which, there is this drugwars game that opens up a whole array of possibilities, and it's taking the blockchain world by storm. All without any need for a proposal system thingie ;)

edit: guess that comment would have been better under your other post, sorry

I think a lot of the problems come from certain ideological baggage that people are bringing into these new technologies. Everyone wants freedom but then some take advantage of it. Then others say it's impossible. I believe it is possible but not without a sufficient amount of preparation and the challenging of certain ideas.

I wonder how this idea of "relocating" some of the funds from author rewards would go over if it was called a "tax", considering how many libertarians are here.

I'm fine with being taxed if I feel the system respresents my values...which I do not. Is it better than elsewhere? At least it's something new!

Aye, it does feel like a tax at first. However I'm thrilled to say the latest state of steem podcast with ned was really really awesome. I think I can finally get to trusting the man a bit more, I feel it was very genuine. Maybe because so much of the pressure is off his shoulders now, go check it out if you haven't. The SPS discussion is towards the later part of the podcast (see description)

Seeing the scalability issues on EOS and other chains, suddenly I find Steem to be very well on its course. Maybe there will be a mighty happy end here after all <3

Much love dude!

The isms reminds me of a classmate in primary school named Ismen. He was a man ( I mean boy ) in a time us kids didn’t know about feminism communism atheism or any other ism. We just played in the sand and bullied each other about physicalities or the clothes we wore in a time that bullying wasn’t a big issue either.

Let’s keep building bridges and strive for consensus without labels or fancy words, my friend

Here's a great example for finding people to create (new) culture with. Enough of the basic notions about society and culture have to overlap
