Mother's Day

Mother's Day is Sunday, May13th. This special day has been celebrated in the U.S. since the 19th century. Ann Reeves Jarvis from West Virginia, helped with starting "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to teach the local women how to care for their children properly. Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, began promoting Mother's Day as a way of honoring mothers for the sacrifices they made for their children. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, officially made the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Jarvis just wanted this day celebrated by mothers wearing a white carnation, and having families visit with their mothers. However, once this day became a national holiday, florists, card companies and others, found a way to make money from this holiday. Having Mother's Day be so commercialized upset Jarvis, and she urged people to stop buying flowers, cards and candies for Mother's Day gifts. She lobbied the government to have Mother's Day removed from the American calendar before her death in 1948.

Approximately $14 billion is spent on Mother's Day in the U.S. I was happy to learn that more phone calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year. If you can't spend the day with your mom, the least you can do is to give mom a call. We also celebrate by giving mom a day off from household chores and cooking.

Mother's Day is celebrated worldwide with different traditions, depending on the country. In Thailand, Mother's Day is celebrated on the birthday of their current queen, Sirikit which is in August. In Ethiopia, Mother's Day is celebrated in the fall. Families come together and sing songs, and eat a large feast to honor motherhood.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the Mom's in the world! Wishing all of you happiness on your special day, no matter how it is celebrated. And please try to appreciate your mom every day of the year.

Omg how cute is that picture haha.
I would have never thought that Mother’s Day is the day with the most phone calls!! That’s nice :)

Isn't that adorable?
I know...right? I thought it would have been Christmas. It sure is nice. : )

Yea I thought the same. Like Christmas or New Year’s Eve. But that’s really nice!

Why don't we be done with it and have a holiday for everyday of the year. We all stay home and collect universal basic income. This message approved by Bernie Sanders.

It does seem like there is always a holiday. No thank you...thank goodness Bernie didn't get elected.

Hello Whatisnew: thanks for the brief history of the origin of Mother's Day; the truth, I did not know it ... in my country we celebrate this day on the second Sunday of May and it is also a day that we use as much as possible, to meet as a family with our mother. Greetings.

My pleasure @cjao20! Thanks for letting me know how you celebrate Mother's Day. Good to know. : )
