Scientists have provided new evidence that the sound is really massive

in #life5 years ago

Physicists have long been convinced that sound waves carry energy, but there was no evidence to suggest that they also have mass. There was no reason to believe that they would create a gravitational field. However, this changed last year when Nicolis and another physicist Riccardo Penco found evidence suggesting that traditional thinking was wrong. They used quantum field theory to prove that sound waves moving through super-fluid helium carry a small amount of matter. More specifically, they found that phonons interact with the gravitational field in such a way that they must have some mass. In a new research, scientists have reported evidence suggesting that the same results are true for most materials.
Using field theory, they calculated that a one watt sound wave that would move for one second in water would carry a mass of about 0.1 milligrams. The authors note that this mass is only a fraction of the total weight of the system that moves due to the passage of the sound wave.

What is important is that researchers did not actually measure the weight borne by the sound wave - they used mathematics to prove that this was happening. In experiments, sound waves move in the Bose-Einstein condensate, a substance from extremely cold atoms. Another and apparently even better approach is to measure the mass of sound waves passing through the Earth during an earthquake. Also, sound waves could carry billions of kilograms of mass, which should be visible on devices that measure the gravitational field.
