（JP/EN)超レア・竿竹の作り方/How to make bamboo laundry pole

Hi everyone!

去年ベルリンへ行く前に帰省してから久しぶりに戻った実家ですが、実はいつも母が首を長くして私の帰りを待っています。というのは、父はあまり器用ではないので細かい家周りの仕事や畑の仕事には積極的ではありません。その点わたしは、簡単な大工仕事も畑もしますので、帰省したら待ってましたとばかり用事が用意されていて、それを一つ一つこなす代わりにご飯を食べさせてもらうという感じなのです😆

I visited my parents home first time I was back from Berlin this March, and actually my mom always waiting my visit letting me do some work for her. Because my father is not so good at craft work so he isn't so positive in work around small houses and work on fields. Instead I do a simple carpentry work and a field, so my mom always looking forward my visiting and it've already prepared what she wants me to do. So... I do these kind of work instead of the meals I like.

今回も簾を吊るしたり、畑の支柱を作ったりということをしていたら、母が面白いことを言いだしました。

「（行きつけの）スーパーの裏にある竹を切ってきて物干し竿竹を作って欲しい」

どうもこれが今回のミッションのようです。ちゃんとノコギリと軍手も用意されていました。詳しく話を聞くと、スーパーの裏の竹林に折れている竹があるので、あれなら切っても大丈夫だろうから持って帰りたいってことのようです。母は妙なところにこだわりがあることがあって、ステンレスの物干し竿は重たくて嫌いだとか。仕方なく竹林に一緒に行って切って持って帰った訳ですが、残念ながら一番面白いはずのこの辺りの写真がないので😂、竿作りの写真だけご紹介します。結局、母が目をつけていた竹は折れて更に湾曲しているのであまり使えそうにないので、足元に切られていた長くて真っ直ぐな乾燥し始めている竹を持って帰りました。

Even this time when hanging some blinds for summer or making a pillar of a field, and then my mom said something interesting.

"I want you to cut the bamboo behind the supermarket and make a clothes poles"

I guess this is my mission this time. A saw and gloves were properly prepared. When I listen to the details, there is a bamboo broken in the bamboo grove behind the supermarket, so it seems to be okay if I cut it, so She would like me to take it home. My mom sometimes sticks to strange things, and the stainless steel one is heavy so she dislike it.
So... I went to the bamboo grove with her, I cut it and brought home. Unfortunately there are no photos of this work that should be the most interesting,
So I introduce only some fotos of making bamboo poles. After all, since the bamboo that my mother put on her eyes were broken and further curved, I could not use it at all, so I used another one which brought back a long, straight and dry bamboo that had been cut.

私は機織り道具を作るために真竹を切って加工することも多くあります。竹については竹工職人さんの作業場にも通って最低限の加工に関する勉強をさせていただきました。
一般的に竹の加工には性が良く「粘り」があるという「真竹（まだけ）」が使われています。切り時は竹が休眠状態になる9月〜12月頃までがいいとされているので、水が上げられて水分を含むこの時期の竹は伐採にも加工にも向きません。今日切った竹は多分「女竹/篠竹（めだけ/しのだけ）」と言われるものだと思うので真竹とは異なるかも知れませんが… とにかく今回はまぁ、母が欲しいというので加工してみることにしました。

I often cut and use bamboo to make weaving tools. Regarding bamboo, I also went to workshop of bamboo craftsman and studied about minimal processing.
Generaly speaking, "Madake(真竹）" is well known with the quality and it's "stickiness" for Japanese bamboo crafts. Best time to cut them is from September to December when bamboo is in a dormant state.
Bamboos at this spring time contain moisture so not so suitable for logging or processing. I think "Medake/Shinodake（女竹/篠竹）" of which I cut this time is probably same with "Madake（真竹). But anyway I decided to process it because It seems my mom really need it.

母が用意したノコギリは錆びてるし竹を切るには少し目が粗すぎます。が、そこは一応なんちゃって竹職人なので何とか使ってみます。あとはナタと紙やすりを出してもらいました。

The saw that my mom prepared is rusty and it is a little too rough to cut bamboo. However, since it is kind of bamboo craftsman/me and there is nothing else, so I tried to use it. Afterwards I asked mom to bring a machete. and some sandpaper.

竹林では竹をまず足元から切って引っ張り出して、次に枝を全て落としてこの状態にします。今回は4.5メートルの竹を切って持ってきてから、使えそうな先端から3.5mを使って竿竹にします。

In bamboo groves, cut the bamboo first from the bottom and pull out, then drop out all the branches like this. This time I cut 4.5 meters of bamboo and brought it, I used it 3.5 meters from the tip that I could use.

このヤスリは木工用ではなく鉄工用の荒いヤスリなんですが、まぁいいかと使ってみます。本来は小さい「豆鉋（まめがんな）」というカンナで節を落としたいんですが、無いのであるもので代用します。

This sandpaper is a bit too rough because this is generally for ironworkers, not for woodworking, but I will try using it. Originally I would like to use ”a small Plane" , but I substituted because they don't have one.

次に目が細かい木工用のヤスリで仕上げます。衣類を干すわけですから、ある程度滑らかでないと、衣類の繊維が引っ掛かってほつれたり、糸を引っ掛けたりする可能性があるので、節の部分などはなるべく綺麗に仕上げます。でもこの作業も、本来の竹の美しさを損ねてしまわないように、最低限の作業にします。

Next, I finish up with fine sandpaper for woodworking. Because it dries clothes, if there is a possibility that clothes fibers get caught and frayed and hook yarns unless it is somewhat smooth, finish the part of the node as neatly as possible. But this work also makes minimal work not to impair the original beauty of bamboo.

出来上がりはこんな感じです。手前が加工済み、奥は未加工です。まだ緑色が残っているのは乾燥していないからなので、今後乾燥してくると竹が曲がったりする可能性はあると思います。また、切り時の秋〜冬にかけてなら、外で焚き火などができるので、焚き火で少し炙って、浮いてきた灰汁（あく）をタオルなどで拭うと、綺麗な光った竹になるんですが（虫退治にもなります）そんなこともまぁ、今日のところは気にしないでおきます。

The finish is like this. The front one is done, and the behind one isn'. It is because there is still green left behind, so I think there is a possibility that bamboo will bend if it gets dry in near future. And if this is autumn or winter time, I can make a bonfire outside, so I make bamboo hot with fire and wipe it with towel, then it becomes beautiful glowing bamboo. This is good for kill insects inside of bamboos, but I won't mind about it this time. haha

そんな訳で、なんちゃって竹職人の仕事としては20％くらいでしたけど、娘としてはまぁ70％くらいの仕事を終えて、今回は良しとしてもらいました😉　一応、刃物は油を引いて整えておきました。

So... it was about 20% as a bamboo craftsman's work, but as a daughter I finished around 70% of my work and I think it's ok 😉 I also adjusted the tools for the next time to use.
