Replace Ubuntu Dock With Dash To Dock

The Ubuntu implementation of Dash To Dock sucks dog bollocks to say the least. I assume they have some rules of design that include something like creating a uniform environment against the user's desires...I mean for the benefit of the users. Ubuntu seems to be like the Apple of Linux in that way. At any rate, after playing with Manjaro for a bit and realizing what Dash to Dock is supposed to be like, I decided to see if it was possible to replace Ubuntu's impotent version with the real thing.

  1. Remove Ubuntu's Dock: sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
  2. Download Dash to Dock and follow the instructions provided. There are a few ways to install it. My preferred method follows.
  3. Make sure you have GNOME Tweaks installed: sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
  4. Make sure the following directory exists: ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]
  5. If the directory does not exist you can create it in the terminal using mkdir .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected], or you can open your Home folder in Files, type CTRL+H to show hidden files and do it that way.
  6. Unzip the downloaded Dash to Dock file and copy the contents of the folder to the folder you created above.
  7. Press ALT+F2 and type r in the "Enter a Command" dialog. Hit return.
  8. Open the Tweaks app, go to the Extensions section, setup your new dock in a not crappy way, and Robert is your father's brother.

Disclaimer: your results may be different than mine, I make mistakes, and be careful with sudo.

It looks a bit like Elementary OS now. Nice writeup.
