The Happiness of Little Things...

Hello, @adsactly readers

I don't intend to make a post that gives the meaning of happiness, because I believe that there are as many notions of happiness as there are people. In other words, I don't think there is a single definition of happiness. What can please me or satisfy me, does not necessarily satisfy you, dear readers. I also believe that we live in a society that mistakenly obliges us not only to be permanently happy, but to prove it. Ironically, being happy can become a task that makes us miserable.

Similarly, mistakenly, happiness has become a place, a person or a thing; and something hard to achieve: the more it doesn't cost to achieve something, the happier we are when we get it. That's why we say we'll be happy only when we get our college degree, when the person we love loves us, or when we win the lottery or dream job. That means, as long as we don't have that which we want so much, we are unhappy and very sad.

Source

Another fallacy about happiness is that after reaching it, it becomes a permanent state. According to this theory we should be happy all the time and we know that this is not so. Anyone's life can be dotted with moments of sadness, melancholy, rage, disappointment. We cannot renounce the possibility of having these feelings, since it would be a distorted way of seeing life: just as there is clarity, there is darkness; sweetness and saltiness; cold and heat; happiness and unhappiness.

There is a famous tale entitled Joy by the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov. This story tells the story of a boy who, after seeing a story in the newspaper, rushes excited to tell his family what he has read and to show the newspaper:

It was midnight. Mitia Kuldarov, excited, scrambled her hair, entered her parents' house like a tromba and hurried through the rooms. His parents were already going to bed...
Where did you come from? his parents asked him in surprise. What's the matter with you?
Mitia burst out laughing and sat on an armchair; her joy was so great that she could not stand.
It's unbelievable! You can't imagine! Look!

Source

With this beginning, we believe that the event that has happened to Mitia must be extremely important, since he is very excited. So it is with Mitia's family, who immediately get up and ask for an explanation for the untimely manner in which he has entered the house and the rooms:

What's the matter with you? Your face is rotten!
It's joyful, Mother! Now all Russia knows me. All of it. Before, only you knew that there is a registered registrar, Dmitry Kuldarov; now all Russia knows. Mother Oh, Lord!

As we can see, there is immense joy in Mitia and this has to do with the possibility of becoming famous and known throughout the country. When Mitia shows the newspaper to their parents, they begin to read the news amid the excitement of Mitia and the expectation of the other children. Mitia tells her parents:

You live like forest animals, you don't read newspapers, you don't pay any attention to advertising, and so many admirable things in newspapers! ... How happy I am! Oh, sir, you know that the newspapers only talk about famous people; well, they have talked about me.

Source

With this confession, we see that Mitia's joy is motivated by the news that appears in the newspaper, but also by the idea that he has and that he tells his parents that only important people appear in the newspapers. Later, Mitia has her father put on his glasses and read the news aloud:

"On December 29, at 11 p.m., the registered registrar Dmitri Kuldarov, finding himself somewhat drunk, slipped and fell on the horse of a muleteer, Iván Dótrov, from the village of Durikina, Yújnovo district, who had his carriage standing there. The horse was frightened, fell over Kuldarov, and dragging the sled in which sat the merchant Stepan Lukov, of the second corporation of Moscow, ran through Lacalle, until he was stopped by some goalkeepers. Kuldarov, who had become senseless, was taken to the police station and examined by a doctor. The blow to the back of his neck was described as mild. From the event the corresponding attestation has been lifted. The patient has been given medical help..."

Source

Reading this review, the parents are stunned and Mitia, still full of joy, tells him that he must continue to show the newspaper to other neighbors to give them the good news, so it is sung in the middle of the night. Despite Mitia's enthusiasm, the family fails to see the relevance of the issue. This leads us to repeat the words we said at the beginning of this text: the notion we have of happiness may be different from that of others. What can make me happy does not necessarily make others happy.

Other of the things that underlie this story is how easily some people can be happy and that because they don't expect happiness to be in great things. Happiness can be in the smallest details, because we are the ones who value those details. A smile, a kiss, a hug, talking to someone, reading, can make us happy for small moments. The human being can choose to be happy.

Now a days, in this fast forward life happiness is rare. I have seen people running like machine spending hours at work only to earn money but never care of their happiness neither of their family . For them happiness is spending on luxurious item. However they forget that happiness always lies around us, we just need to find them by diverting our mind to good things that make things easy .
I remember once while coming home from at 10 PM in metro I was totally exhausted , the day was tiring and was half slept, then suddenly I saw a baby playing in her mom's arm, hearing his voice and looking at the cuteness I gently smiled and then took that kid to play along next few min untill my station reaches. All my tiredness was gone once I reached home and further feeling more exuberant....that day I realise what happiness is....just look around and keep smiling.

What a beautiful comment, @steemflow. Catches or encloses all sense of what happiness should be. As I said in my post, there are individual ways of seeing happiness and there is the bad idea of believing that getting expensive things can satisfy us, but that joy can be as ephemeral as the breeze. Thank you for commenting. Greetings

Thanks @nancybriti I have realised them so can understand how to find some around us....

An article of great significance, @nancybriti. I share your reflection on happiness. Perhaps this word has been loaded with a certain grandiloquent sense by the frequent use made of it in the significant contexts that it alludes to. Sometimes it is only inner assent, spiritual openness, gratitude of the soul, a kind of smile of the spirit. That is why, as you propose, we can find it temporarily in the small experiences of our life (like a sunrise, a sea breeze, a clearing on a frontier, a flower, the song of a bird...), which our soul takes gratefully. Thank you for your beautiful and stimulating post. Greetings.

I believe that if everything, no matter how simple, can make us happy, our life will be more rewarding and bearable. To hope to reach great goals, to conquer our impossible love, to be happy, will be to postpone happiness every day. And we will wither away without having lived! Thank you for your comment, @josemalavem

I agree with you that

there is [not] a single definition of happiness ... Ironically, being happy can become a task that makes us miserable.

We can see this frantic "competition" for attention and popularity in the social networks, where people are willing to do the most outrageous things so that other follow and give them "likes".
Our kids are growing up with the wrong notion of what happiness should entail.
Even if what makes people varies, one thing remains true to everybody: Happiness is a personal, intimate state of being. One should feel good with oneself.

Anyone's life can be dotted with moments of sadness, melancholy, rage, disappointment. We cannot renounce the possibility of having these feelings, since it would be a distorted way of seeing life.

the way I see it, life is random and we have little control over it. There are obvious things we can avoid and reactions we can channel, but, like the weather, we can't expect life to remain unchanged when we get to what we think is a state of happiness.

I like the analogy you make with the weather. It's perfect! Any season cannot be permanent, it must be variable and even unpredictable. I like to believe that I am happy and there are days that I believe it and my happiness can be contagious; but there are days that I carry my own grey clouds, and it is also worth. Thank you for always making excellent comments, @hlezama.

Thank you for the great posts.
I think that no matter how much we want to romanticize internal happiness and balance, the fact that we are socially indoctrinated to interact with others following preexisting rules, puts us under some "universal" requirements, money being one of them.
To function in a society ruled by money, we need money, even if in low amounts. Not to be able to cover basic needs will pile tons of unhappy moments on top of our most titanic efforts at balance and self love.

A very interesting and inspiring post

We cannot measure happiness with matter. happy existence in our hearts. Feelings that can not be bought with some money. Happiness is beyond the material value. happiness can come from not getting gold or a lot of money. Happiness can even come when we are too tired, tired and annoyed when we go home to meet the family and get a warm welcome from children and wife. all problems in the office or workplace disappear instantly when meeting children. We hug them with feelings that fill our hearts. Happy feelings come when our wives welcome with a smile. Happiness when you see the children can do all the school work on their own. Be happy when we are tired and tired, then they offer a thirst-relieving drink.
As if we have all the wealth in the world.
happiness can come from small and simple things.
because we know the most valuable treasure is family.
Thank you @nancybriti

Indeed: happiness can be to come home after a long day of work; to be with our family, to have a hot dish to eat, a glass of water to quench our thirst. If we believe that material goods are those that give happiness, then we will believe that only the rich are happy and that is false. Each person decides to be happy. The story you have chosen to illustrate this concept is perfect. I laughed when I began to read the newspaper article. Mitia is naturally happy individual. I hope many many more of us can learn to be the same.

This is a very timely post for me. I realized yesterday that, despite my having significant challenges that others feel they could not bear, I am happy in my life. How lucky I feel to have that. We all have the choice to be happy or bitter or something in between. I don't see the reason to choose anything less than happy, at least not for me.

Joy is always within reach.

I'll give you 20 points for your comment! I think it's perfect. Being happy is a decision and one deserves a good decision. Being bitter and unhappy only hurts those who feel that way. Not only will you age sooner and be excluded, you will surely get sicker and die faster. It's easy to be happy if it's just a decision. Thank you for your words ;)

Agree, happiness is often find in small things... for me, music is one of the small things that make me happy. Too bad most of the time we are so focused on finding absolute happiness we ignore the simple pleasures in life.

Music makes me very happy too. Also to see a film, to be with the family, to see the sea. All these things I do daily, so I think I'm happy daily. A hug, @ladyrebecca.

@nancybriti, We have to make sure that we are enjoying little things in life because most of the people in my opinion have wrong perception of Happiness and that is they think that through achieving big things in life happiness will stay with us, but reality is, simplicity and little things hold happiness.

That's right, @chireerocks. If we say that we will be happy only when we graduate, we will be denying, for example, the joy of taking an exam, passing a semester, or simply when we met a friend. Happiness is not a point of arrival, but a journey. Greetings

Absolutely true words.

Excellent article my dear and admired @nancybriti, comes to mind a reading called "Happiness is the way" that made me understand many things that maybe I had not taken into account, sometimes we hope to achieve something to believe that we will find happiness, receive a college degree, buy a car, lose weight, have a child....without realizing that happiness is not an objective found at the end of a road we travel to reach it, happiness is in the way, in every moment lived, in a song, in a smile, we only have to decide to adopt it, it is definitely to be happy is a decision of our own.
