Liverpool Vs Fulham - English Premier League - Sunday November 11 - Preview

in #liverpool5 years ago

On Sunday Manchester City host their local rivals Manchester United and take on one of the only sides to defeat them last season. While United's hopes of winning the league this season are slim they could do their other main rivals a big favour by repeating the feat again and handing City their first defeat of the season. Before that huge game, Liverpool host Fulham and will have to recover from a midweek defeat and put in a much better performance if they want to keep their title hopes alive. On paper, it may seem like an easy task with Liverpool undefeated and 3rd in the league while Fulham holds up the table at the bottom. But Fulham did spend a huge amount of money in the summer transfer window and do have some quality players within their squad. If there is any positive that can be taken from the result on Tuesday night it might be a reminder not to take victories for granted, even smashing a team 4-0 just 2 weeks before doesn't guarantee an easy win if you play them again.

Jurgen Klopp will have almost a full-strength squad available to him with just Oxlade Chamberlain ruled out. Lovren and Clyne have previously been out of contention with illnesses but have both recovered. The midfield has come under fire recently and so the return of both Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson may be a welcome boost for the Liverpool manager. They could both return to the side and it is almost certain Firmino will start after he lost his place in the starting lineup to Daniel Sturridge but was then recalled 45 minutes later at halftime.

Liverpool will likely still have the whistles and jeers of 50,000 Serbians echoing in their ears from Tuesday night and will be eager to move on, but will face a few reminders of their nightmare night on Sunday. On Tuesday it was a former Chelsea player from Germany linking up with a tall, powerful Serbian forward that caused them all kinds of torment and it's almost certain that Fulham's manager who also happens to hail from Serbia will call on the services of his tall, powerful Serb forward Aleksandar Mitrovic and his German who also happens to have once played for Chelsea in André Schürrle. Between the pair of them, they are responsible for 9 of Fulham's 11 goals this season and Liverpool will hope to do a much better job at shutting them down than they did with Marin and Pavkov.

I did watch their recent defeat against Huddersfield and was pretty unimpressed, however, I am informed that the game did not display them in their best light and they are usually more of a footballing side. One thing I did take away was how vulnerable they looked against counter attacks and believe sides with more pace than Huddersfield would have really punished them and won by a larger margin. This could be a clear route to victory for Liverpool who has no shortage of pace in attack with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane leading their charge. That would mean inviting Fulham to attack and on Tuesday there was a catalogue of errors which lead to the goals and so this would be a bit of a risk, but besides that game against Red Star, the Liverpool defence has been extremely strong all season and so should be capable of handling Fulham's advances.

With Chelsea hosting Everton and Manchester City taking on United it will be a rare occasion in history in which Liverpool fans will actually be happy to see their 2 biggest rivals win. But regardless of what happens in those games the main thing for those fans will be to see their own team get back to winning ways and take the 3 points from Fulham in the lunchtime game.
