Fallacy cherry picking or fallacy of incomplete evidence

in #logic6 years ago

Knowing fallacies is very important when discussing any topic with another person, and although we do not believe that we discuss often, that is a common mistake because much of our day to day we make value judgments with other people, and We exchange our opinion with them, and that is a kind of debate, although it is not officialized or seen as such.

Fallacy cherry picking or fallacy of incomplete evidence

This fallacy is a type of cognitive bias where the person intentionally or unconsciously omits certain information to favor their point of view. The most common case is confirmation bias.

The fallacy in question is one of the most common in any type of debate, since it is very easy to omit certain information and say only what one it is convenient for you, as it is also very common to have partial information about a certain matter and that, although it is not intentional, can be beneficial for the point of view that you try to defend.

It is so common that we have all committed it once, and more than once. And surely we will do it many times more.

A common example of people using this fallacious resource, are politicians as a method to convince people of their ideas. As well as the more ignorant a person is, the more likely he is to make this mistake.

Here is a graphic example of the fallacy in question, which as I mentioned, is to select a piece of information which favors x point of view. In this example we see as a graph that clearly shows the upward trend of the temperature of the planet, showing how the radical change of climate on the planet occurs (which is real and anthropogenic), and a circle is seen selecting only part of this Graph, precisely where there is a small decrease in the line of the graph, but in general it is clearly seen that the trend is bullish.

I hope that knowing this fallacy is useful to you, very probably it will be because as I said it is very, very common, and thanks to knowing this we can defend ourselves or refute the wrong arguments of another person in a conversation.
