Valentine’s Day: Sweet As Sugar

February 14th is celebrated as the day to show your loved ones how much they mean to you.

Love is expressed in hearts with cards, candy, flowers, jewelry, dinners or whatever makes the romance sweeter.

I remember how exciting it was in elementary school to leave a Valentine card for your friends on their desk.

Usually there was a special someone to secretly leave a card with simple little messages like, Be My Valentine. or

There’s been a few theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day. The most interesting and not so romantic is the one from the Middle Ages where in a drunken naked gathering, the females would be whipped by males with hides of animals they had slain.

This was a ritual of fertility with the belief it would make the females fertile. I don’t know how much romance was involved by these wild Romans who participated in the pagan ritual..

I like this story except for the poor man having his head cut off. It is of a Saint Valentine who administrated to the faithful of the Romans.

Before his execution on February 14 , he wrote a note to the jailer’s daughter signed "from your Valentine” which is said to have inspired today's romantic notions on that date. They had remained friends after he laid his hands on her eyes and her sight had been restored.

Whatever the origins of the Love Day, the tradition made it’s way to the new world and by 1913, Hallmark was pumping out the Valentine cards.

Many people think Valentine’s Day has gotten too commercial but I think love is here to stay. What do you think?
