Hello dear steemians!!!

I would to start my travel around Catalonia in this historic and magic village.

The strategic ubication was the motive ,that the Greeks in the 6th century b.C. chose this place for their first colony. After that , was interesting for the Romans in the 3rd century a.C. and the Muslims conquierd all this area abouth the 8th century a.C. until Charlemagne recovered all the teritory in 785 a.C.

The name of Ampuries would come out from de name of the region Alt Emporda!

Castle ruins

The church was built around the year 800 after Christ and its last complete restoration was in 2005 respecting its original facade.

The church

But not everything is history here, in the church square we can found differents restaurants that offer us a wide gastronomic variety.

In this time we find the traditional Calçots. A kind of onion, better known as a late onion from LLeida. They are common in the interior of Catalonia, cooked on the fire and although their external appearance has to be burned , inside they are very tender and tasty. In the restaurants they are usually served in clay tiles to conserve the heat and they are accompanied with romesco sauce. If you visit Catalonia in winter time, you must try this dish.

Sant Marti d´Empuries is a small village of great beauty that is surrounded by a rampart. It its last census it cited its population under 100. But like at all touristic areas , in summer time, multiply these quantity up by 7.

When we live the village we find ourselves with a viewpoint from where we can observe all the gulf of Roses.

If we look to the left we will see the beaches of Sant Pere Pescador (famous for the world championships of Windsurf and Kitesurf), Empuriabrava , Santa Margarita and Roses , and if we llok to the right we will see the beautifull beaches of Sant Marti d´Empuries and the village of L´Escala.

Then we find a pedestrian zone , better known as the promenade of Empuries, that borderd all the beautiful beaches of the area. In summer time, we can take a touristic train , better known as “ carrilet de L´Escala” , that take a tour from Sant Marti d´Empuries to Cala Montgo , going trough the center of L´Escala and promenade of Riells.

On one of its beaches we can find one the most emblematic monument of Sant Marti d´Empuries, The Hellenistic breakwater , that was probably built in the 1st century b.C. by the Romans, due to the intensification of commercial traffic. Its dimensions are about 82 meters long, 6 meters wide and 6,50 meters high.

By the side of the promenade we can find adventure playgrounds, and large green areas, where the natives enjoy do picnics.

image

By the half of the ride we can find the area of the biggest tourist attraction, THE RUINS OF EMPURIES, gateway of Greek and Roman culture to the Iberian Peninsula.

In this deposit remains the rests of a greek village ( the colonial enclave of Emporion) and the rests of a roman village ( ancient Emporiae) created on a roman military camp.

In summer time they do guided visits for the price of 5€ adults and 4€ children. Also you can enjoy concerts in this zone.

Leaving the ruins and continuing on the walk,we find the creeks of fine sand that stand out for their beauty.

(This idilics places full of magic also leave space for love)

In the middle of that beauty where we find the Hotel Spa Empuries , built in 1907, formerly called Teresita. The hotel was built to accommodate the first archaeologists who came to explore the Greco- Roman village´s rests.

This year, on the last beach , the City Council has allowed that the pet lovers can enojoy this nature beauty together with their animals.

Arriving to the end of the promenade , we found the statue that pays tribute to the Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1982. The Olympic fire reached the Catalan coasts exactly to these beaches on june 13, where was received by thousands of people in a very emotional ceremony, and from where started its journey troughout the Spanish territory visiting in 39 days the 17 autonomous communities.
