"The Heart of the Dahlia."
Dahlias are native to Mexico and declared their national emblem in 1963. They are members of the Asteraceae family and there are over 42 species of dahlia with their hybrids grown as garden plants. Well known related species include sunflowers, daisies, chrysanthemums and zinnias.
These beautiful annual blooming plants have mostly tuberous roots but some have herbaceous stems. They are characterized by their central disc florets surrounded by ray petals and are available in different forms and sizes ranging from dwarf (40cms) to 1.5 – 2 meters.
Dahlias are grown from either seeds or tubers and will thrive equally well in pots or in the garden. When cared for properly, they will produce an ongoing display of colourful blooms for many years. They do love the sun and prefer warm climates so in colder climates it is better to plant them when there is little risk of frosts forming.
