Manga Review: Dark Hunters vol 1

I was not familiar with this series at all when I picked this up at a library sale. Apparently it's based on a series of very popular novels. The premise is pretty intriguing, but I'm not sure it translates exactly to comic form.

The idea is that there are vampires threatening humanity, and the only thing between us and them is a race of immortals knows as the Dark Hunters. There are a lot of ties to Greek mythology, and it's a pretty entertaining read. However, I get the sense that there is a lot of content from the novels that is necessarily skipped over or simplified here. So it's a really quick read, but not a whole lot happens in volume 1. I'm hopeful that future volumes will expand on things, and volume 1 for sure made me interested in reading further.

Volume 1 pairs one of the dark hunters with a human. They end up being handcuffed together with magical handcuffs, hilarity ensues, and they realize they're attracted to each other. The art seems like standard manga fare. It's adequate, but nothing spectacular, IMO.

The back of the book says it's appropriate for 13 years and older, but I would probably say maybe 15 and up. There's a fair bit of sexual innuendo, but not the type that goes over kids' heads. It's pretty overt.

So if you're looking for a light read with a lot of fantasy/horror and romcom elements, this is a pretty good manga. Just be prepared for the feeling that you're missing out on some of the subtext from the novels. But the good news is that if you are interested by this and the universe it introduces, there are an absolute TON of novels you can read.
