"You can add riding around with the Afro-Ginger-Mutant to your list of things that can go wrong in one day."

"Well, if you put it that way...."

There was no end

of things that could go wrong in one day. I had just punched a girl in the face. She had it coming, but that was never the point. Alicia Angel defamed my sister and rubbed it in my face that Jenny was probably dead. Why. Why. What possible satisfaction did a mean girl get from seeking the maximum possible hurt to inflict on another?

Sara Lacy, in her cop-porn-blue uniform, stood watching as Ty and I walked to the exit. She shook her head at me.

"Kristy. I know we don't really need to have this conversation again."

"Impulse control. I know, I know."

She sighed. Her gaze shifted to Ty. "You seem to get it. You're a target for bullies but you let their insults bounce right off your skin." Your freckled, mutant skin, she could have added.

Ty shrugged. "It isn't possible for me to care what those low-lifes think."

"Hey." I didn't like the implication here. "I don't care what anyone thinks of me, but my parents care, and I'm not letting anyone call my sister a stoner, a bimbo, a felon, or a loser with a death wish. And anyone else had seen how inflammatory and provocative Alicia was being, she'd be facing lawsuits." I couldn't un-see it. The last thing Alicia called up for me to see before I hauled off and slugged her.

Status Update: DEAD

Today was also Jenny's birthday,

the first of December, and I was planning to bake a pound cake in her honor. She liked plain cake, not much frosting, and "found" items from nature as the decoration, not icing from a tube.

And who knows. She could come walking into our driveway at any moment with a big story to tell.

Status Update: Alive and Kicking!

That's what I wanted to see. And the next person to call my sister a low-life, stoner, felon, bimbo, or corpse would be kicked across the football field by Kristy herself. You're welcome, world.

And that was as far as I got yesterday.

(Alive and kicking, but barely, with this influenza!)

Pound cake was made with a shocking pound of butter and a pound each of sugar, flour, and, eggs. Before the gluten diagnosis, I baked mine in a Bundt mold and dusted it with powdered sugar.
