Market Friday Goes into the Woods

in #marketfriday5 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and different cultures.

image.png

I have been to so many new places lately! I love to share and be shared with! I have always and forever liked to see different fruits and vegetables or products that are being sold. Perhaps I cannot get them here. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

But first, a flower. Always a flower.

The loveliness of you never escapes me
May I gaze upon you, always and a day?

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Welcome! Step right in! Everything in the shop is made by the owners in this cozy little village that sets on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It is definitely a wonderful shop and I could feel it draw me in as I tried to walk by.

Handmade. Something for everyone here.

Sandwiched in between some of the kitschy souvenir shops that dot the downtown, there is a place. I call it art in wood. I look at a downed tree in the forest and see a tree. These guys see potential birdhouses and wooden spoons and all sorts of pieces to create unique focal points in your house. Their eye-catching work is creative and beautiful. Or perhaps it is because I really like the feel of wood. The texture, the grains, the patterns it makes. Oh! Let's take a walk through and see what we can find.

MF14.JPG

I am totally in love. Between the creativity and artistry, It is a must-see-kind of place! Add on the save-the-earth premise, and I am theirs.

Those birdhouses were so amazing looking!

Ribbet collage 3.jpg

Those bowls were made out of a single block of wood. They have dishes and bowls stacked high in the sky. They do spectacular work! Above all, you have to be excited about their commitment to preserving Maine's natural beauty, securing a future for our children. I just love that concept.

Mermaids and mermaids. One of a kind, hand-carved nautical maidens.

The myth says that a mermaid figurehead on the prow of a boat brings good luck to all aboard, even though women were often forbidden to board ships because they were thought to bring bad luck. Superstition held that women angered the sea gods, who would punish the sailors by conjuring up violent weather and rough waters. Some captains took this so seriously, they would toss women overboard if the weather began to turn.

The burning question, then, is why would a mermaid figurehead bring a boat good luck? Apparently, fully clothed females were no good, but a topless woman would calm rough seas — the scandal of a bare-chested woman would shame nature into behaving itself. Mermaids, as it happens, are typically topless, so using a mermaid figurehead on the prow of a ship pacified the sea gods, assured good weather and pointed a safe way back to port. Many sailors still use these figureheads today, as a nod to tradition. source

Everything for the kitchen. The variety was staggering! Special order of just special to you. If you imagine it, they can make it or probably already have one made. I love the feel of the wood, nicely smooth to the touch, as my hands caress its grain.

MF9.JPG

Fashinable canes or sensible walking sticks - plus so many other things! This place was piled high and there was more where that came from.

Question: A poor man walks into a bar and starts chatting with a much wealthier man…

…The poor man says to the rich man, “You know, I know every song in the world. I bet you all your fortune and worldly possessions that I can find a song with any name you want.” The rich man, laughing, accepts the poor man’s bet, and bets him to find a song with his daughter’s complete name in it. Her full name is Julie Monique Alexandria. A few minutes later, the poor man leaves the bar with the rich man’s wallet, car keys, and clothes in tow. How did he win the bet?

Answer: He sang “Happy Birthday.”

Don't forget to give that life-size rocking horse a try if you go there. This lady was having the time of her life. They actually encourage people to get on it and take a ride!

Yee-haw!

Their beauty is in the craftmanship

These sculpted birds were calling my name. They are the whole reason that I stopped there.

These makes such a rich statement. The wooden bowls are so versatile in their use.

MF20.JPG

There are hats and mittens and more mermaids. Oh, my! I could have spent hours and hours in there. Oh, wait! I did spend hours in there and hours.

Bins and barrels full of little pieces for woodworking.

I want to thank the owner, Dominic! He does the carving and is a wonderful conservationist. He does exceptional work and is a special human being.

Thank you for coming along! I had a great time with you!

Don't ever forget what wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

Nice pile of wood you have here. Nice work. So warm.
I hope the firefighter station is close by, hehe.

Yes. Yes. It is such an amazing pile of wood that they have and even more so after he puts his touches of art into action. I actually love everything about wood, including its texture and feel oh, so this store really appeals to me. I like it even better because they don't chop trees down to make their Goods, but use the downed trees instead.

Now, about that fire station...

Thanks for visiting work at Friday and I hope that you are having a great weekend!

I can't get enough of:

A) Your gorgeous well done thorough blog post.
B) All that amazing wood! Gosh i am crazy for wood. All of it! All. But mostly the useful kitchen utensils. But, it's so hard to choose!

Awesome concept! Have a wonderful weekend 💕 !tip

Thank you so much for your oh-so lovely comment! I can honestly say that I am just as taken with wood as you are. It is such an amazing piece of art and a very available source under normal circumstances. These two guys have really shown me what you can do with wood my has been downed by mother nature. I am not a very artistic person so it amazed me to see so many things, especially being as most of them had functionality. Not just another pretty face!

Thank you for the generous comment about the post and I hope that you will visit Market Friday again someday. Having most wonderful weekend! And thank you so much for the tip!

I also love to !tip

You may be surprised to learn that I am a wood lover! Oh yes, I am addicted to all things wood. Honestly between the smell all the way to the touch, mmm I love wood. One of my (many, many) fantasies for retirement (after hitting the lottery) is to have a small woodworking shop. Oh yes, see the Old Man is slightly handy with his hands, believe it or not.

Hmm that tall mermaid is pretty cute, but I think I will have to go for the other one, I always preferred shorter gals.

Dont even ask about the brain teaser!

Great post Sunshine! I want to go there someday.

Well, that doesn't surprise me one single bit! I think that you and I had a conversation one time about wood and it is really apparent that you are addicted to All Things Wood. There is just something about the smell and just the touch of it. I can run my hands along a piece of wood when it's all sanded down and smooth and it is just like heaven. I'm not sure that I can explain that touch to you but I am sure that you know what I mean. Setting up a woodshop should be right in your wheelhouse because you are so handy that I I cannot believe that you don't have one already. You do so much handy work now and the minute you set up your shop oh, you're going to be busier than ever. You can put that retirement behind you then. LOL

As for the mermaid, oh, I think you picked right because the tall one is prettier and you have to get realistic about it all. If you're going to have a woodshop, you may be able to carve your own. Then you can make her in your own image. Now that may be dangerous.

Maybe I should give a hint with the brain teaser? It does seem a little bit unfair. I hope you do get to go to Maine in Into the Woods. It's one of those places that I think you would love.

Wow what a great post. Thanks it is always fun to read yours stuff. I know i missed a lot of stuff been busy but glad I saw this one. I really love the look of things made with wood like that. Have a good one.

Thanks for stopping by #MarketFriday, Steve @stever82 Into the Woods is a wonderfully captivating store made from trees that were downed by natural causes, as opposed to being chopped down to create their artwork. The two men who run it are amazing artists that do all of their own work and the store is on three levels.

So much wood to see!

I do love the feel of wood and the different kinds. I am glad you enjoyed the store and I hope that you have a wonderful day!

!tip

Yes that is very cool that they do that work. My dad lived up in the mountains before he passed he loved to carve things from the dead wood he would find. He didn't have that skill but he could make a few cool things.
You are too kind with the tips thanks.

The pleasure is mine!

@dswigle , I like this market! So many different wood products. I couldn't leave empty-handed. I know that! These birdhouses are absolutely amazing :) Thank you for your tour!
I joined this week, too. :) https://steemit.com/photography/@madlenfox/market-friday-and-winter-fair

I'm so glad you like the market! It was a lot of fun to go to and I spent hours and hours in it! I couldn't make myself leave. I think the birdhouses impressed me the most, there were so many of them and took up a whole wall.

It was my pleasure and I am happy to see you joining #MarketFriday!

WOW what a cool shop so much for Interest to see I could see myself spending a bunch of time in there checking it all out I do love shops like this

Here is my Post for this week

https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@tattoodjay/market-friday-street-vendor-trucks

It was such a cool shop and yes! I really did love it in there, JJ @tattoodjay I was there for hours and hours and the owner was so kind and let me take all the pictures I wanted. Seriously nice guy and I must say that the two partners really know their way around wood!

I love photography, but, I used to love playing with woodworking tools when the kids were just starting to be able to put a puzzle together and made dozens of jigsaw puzzles and little toys. I had no idea men were having the time of their life in these woodshops they created. Oh, yes! Must have had a secret handshake with each other to never tell what fun it was! ;)

Thanks for dropping the link here and I hope you are having a most peaceful weekend!

!tip

MY Dad was a master carpenter and joiner, I did not get that trait from him I am terrible at any kind of wood working project, I to could have spend ages in their however even though I cannot do woodwork projects myself but I do love seeing crafted items and things like that

Have a great weekend

and thanks for the tip

Oh!! Well, perhaps one of your kids inherited it! That would be the same blessing. :)
agree with you that handcrafted and artistically crafted wood really rings my chimes. I am a wood petter. I like to run my hand on the wood and get the feel of it. I have no idea why I am so taken with its texture and looks, but, I really am.

Thanks again, JJ!! The weekend is upon us! Hope you are doing something good with yours!

I don't think any of my kids got the woodworking gene but a couple of them are or used to be very good at various crafts

I to find myself drawn to running my hand over wood products and even tree I am not sure why but it seems to give me a feel good feeling I know that may sound weird but I really do feel that way

Funny story I used to always carry a big stick with me in Missions and a friend made me a walking stick on his lather about 19 years ago which I love and jokingly call it my beating stick, but the funny thing is if i am fired up and feel like having a go at someone just picking it up does cool me down

I actually love doing some small woodworking projects. Making jigsaw puzzles and little toys for kids.

I know exactly what you mean with running your hands over wood! It's bizarre, but it does feel good. Oh, my! Men and big sticks... shaking my head. LOL But, there you go. Almost like a security blanket!

Thanks again, my friend!

With us moving to flexible work space possible next week I was wondering what to do with it and was considering ditching it, but I don't think I will be able to so will bring it home one day next week will pretend it is a walking stick so I don't get the wrong kind of looks LOL

Thats so cool you do projects like that if I ever need a jigsaw puzzle made I know who to ask :)

Haha! Yes. I can see the looks now on their face as you walk across the city and hop into the train. Make sure you wear your best rugged-looking Kiwi outfit.

Oh, the jigsaws are the easy part! Painting them is the challenge!

The wood is warm, pleasant and alive. I like it too.
You are a true model and I learned again something from you, thank you! Happy New Year!

Thanks so much for your always wonderful comments, Dan! @bluemoon I I am always happy to see you over here on #MarketFriday. There is just something so beautiful about wood, especially when they reuse it in a very artistic way. While some of them are not exactly art, all of them have a degree of functionality. I was so surprised when I walked through those doors into a beautiful Market full of wood. I must say that it was the birds that lured me inside, but once I got inside those doors I literally spent hours and hours wandering around. They even have a second floor. A most wonderful place and when I go back to Bar Harbor, Maine, I expect that I will be visiting there again.

If I Were a Rich woman, I think that I would have them carve me my own mermaid. I have this thing about mermaids. I really do like them, but I think part of it is left over from my childhood and living on the water. I am not sure what you think you learned from me this time, but if you learned anything, it makes me a happy person.

I hope the new year is treating you well and as for me I have been taking all of my photos on my computer and moving them over to an external hard drive. It has taken days and so I have been without a computer. I am not a fan of trying to make a post on my phone oh, so I have been very inactive, but I am trying to run and catch up now. Have a most wonderful weekend and as usual, thank you for visiting #MarketFriday!

!tip

With all my pleasure! I'm sorry I didn't post today in #marketfriday ... I was almost but still I didn't. I have learned but I don't want to tell you now what ...
I find something else in common, and I don't post with my smartphone either. I do not like.

No worries! Posting isn't required, it is something that is fun and only when there is time to explore. I rarely do challenges anymore, I have been so busy and sometimes I have to post what I have. But, someday, life will get quieter and I can pursue what I like.

Some smartphones like iPhone10 take better pictures than a lot of cameras, but, I still like my camera better. Just sometimes I have to go undercover and am grateful for the phone.

You don't have to tell me what you learned. I was curious, but, I can understand. Also, I really liked your GIFs. I think they added a little bit of fun to the post. Thanks, Dan! @bluemoon

Găsești întotdeauna cuvintele potrivite atunci când scrii un mesaj, Dan! Mulțumesc pentru apreciere ! Numai bine -

You wrote perfectly in Romanian, congratulations and thanks!
What I have learned ... now I think I can tell you because I don't think many will read this post anymore. Because I've read almost all of your posts, especially #marketfriday, I've noticed that sometimes you're recycling some older posts. It seems to me a good idea and I think I will do the same, especially when I will not have "material" for something new.

Thank you! I am glad you learned something worthy. :)

This will happens from time to time, although most times, it is like this time, where my computer and pictures were not available (I was working on it, transferring information to another hard drive) I see no shame in reworking a piece, if you noticed I added a section on mermaids, put in a riddle and reworked the format and wording. But, even so, especially when neither of us was known by anyone, older posts can be reworked to get some attention on them. I have some posts with two replies on them. I almost wrote at the bottom that it was reworked, but, in the end, forgot it and well, it never got done. But, yes. I try to be fresh, but, especially when I am away and such, I hold no shame. It is better than none at all, right?

Mersi Dan! @bluemoon O seară reușită îți doresc !

I hope you don't misunderstand me. What I said is not a criticism, I think you did that very well. I'll do it myself. I think you noticed no one noticed this ...
I think it is good to resume, customized, old posts with the hope that others will see them now.
You have a higher visibility, many friends read you but my posts don't think they are read by more than 5 to 10 people.
I wish you a beautiful and quiet Sunday ... after the end of the year's agitation.

Oh, my! Not at all!! I was agreeing with you that it is fine to rework and enhance a piece. I try not to recycle too much, but I am never ashamed to do it. Honest. I did not misunderstand you or take it as criticism. Otherwise, I would have said something. LOL

I hope you are having a lovely day!
