Market Friday in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

in #marketfriday5 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and different cultures.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They are easier to find in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much!! ❤

Puerto Rico. That is where this adventure started. Thank you for walking through #MarketFriday with me today. It started out sunny, with a slight sea breeze, a perfect day in paradise. Some days, life is perfect… Some days, it is even better than that. I like walking the streets of Old San Juan. From the cobblestones streets, to the Fort surrounding the waterfront, still standing from days gone by. Relics of another time. The streets are one open Market or so it seems. A piece of sidewalk invites a Market of sorts.

San Juan was one of the first cities established by Spanish colonizers in the "New World." The streets were paved with blue cobblestones starting in 1784. The original cobblestones were made using iron slag, the waste from smelting iron, and were used as ballast in ships that came from Europe in the 1700's.

Most of the blue cobblestones have been replaced in an effort to make streets more evenly paved, but you can still see originals on Calle Cristo.source

Such a blended culture of history it owns. Nestled along the wall of the city, the tower offers a brilliant view as the sun dips low on the horizon, a natural canvas with breathtaking interplays of color. The old Fort surrounds the city, protecting her.

The cobblestone path leads you to a variety of interesting sights on the waterfront. The walls that once protected the city only adds to the romantic walk along the San Juan Bay. A museum of landmarks surrounds the city. Oh, beauty!

I have been to so many new places lately! I love to share and be shared with! I have always and forever liked to see different fruits and vegetables or products that are being sold. Perhaps I cannot get them here. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Weaving through the sea of umbrellas, there is food, fun and sometimes an animal or three. It is always a surprise what will be on the vendor's table. There were not specialty Markets, but rather, the everyday kind.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

source

If you have me, you want to share me. If you share me, you haven’t got me. What am I?

source

Answer: A secret!!

There were umbrellas and tables every place you walked in Old San Juan. In the parks, on the streets, on the sides of the roads. Nothing and nowhere was sacred. Put out your merchandise and people will buy. I'm serious. Especially if it says authentic, souvenier, or sale!

Street food is part of the charm. There is food all around where people will gather, especially the bigger Markets or parks. Some of the food, I can smell for blocks before I see them!

I have seen animals of all sorts being sold on the streets of Puerto Rico. For the life of me, I cannot see how one can put these majestic beauties out without their regal feathers. I know that stress can play a part in their loss of front feathers, but, who knows?

The birds were incredible, but, these birds were definitely lacking in feathers. Were they sick or deficient in what they were eating? I don’t know, but, I didn’t want to hold it or see that little boy holding them. What if they were ill?

The rain came in drops, playing with the vendors. I can imagine how difficult without the benefit of a covering, playing with the weather would be no fun. The umbrellas keep the sun off, but, there isn’t so much protection from the rain.

Oh, yes!! It was torrential!

For all the rain that came, in buckets and torrents, it still was a pretty wonderful day. The sun came back again, drying the clothes on my back. How can you beat that? There should be forgiveness, no?

CUE THE MUSIC MAESTRO!

I want to thank you for taking this trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico with me. I am still island hopping and so, will be gone for another week, so if I take a little longer to respond to your post, don't think I forgot you. I will answer them all! There were literally hundreds of other vendors hawking their goods, but, I am short on bandwidth and this is taking longer than intended, I will cut it off here! I appreciate your taking the time and energy to read the post and I hope that you have a most wonderful #MarketFriday! Steem on!!

A flower. There must always be a flower to color my world.

Words have some degree of inadequacy
When I gaze upon your loveliness
You speak without saying a word
Or maybe a few, if perchance
There are whispers of the heart and love

My love, my love

How could I deny you
A last chance of the season
To make it all right
Once again

Today is the perfect day for a perfect day.

Don't ever forget what wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

Noooo! You always and forever do amazing markets! I don't know what you mean, I have neven anything but amazing places from yours!

Not only are they unique, but they are also in places most will never see in their lifetime. Whether by choice or chance, your life is certainly more exciting than the average person. I know, some days, you could stand a little boredom!!

Thank you for dropping the link and for always putting forth great posts! As for the bad wifi... oh, yes!! They are legend!

!tip

Haha! Well my life is not boring. I agree with you there. Thank you so much for the boost. I am not happy with my bad photos and my lack of processing - due to time and yes, bad wifi. But I do have to remember that my location trumps all. I lead a very blessed life. Thank you for reminding me :)

Oh yes!! I envy you, but, for this very second, I am living the island life, my favorite as it is surrounded by the sea and mother nature!

So many beautiful photos! I love the one with the street lights and the walkway by the water with the sunset lighting the clouds! Such a romantic looking place for leisurely strolls!

Oh I feel for the guy holding hands in the rain. Poor camera and no bag... I hope it is a weatherproof one! Interesting tune you choose. I was thinking this classic one by the great Gordon Lightfoot ;-)

Oh, see! I couldn' t think of a rainy song... well, CCR - but, Rainy Days and Mondays by the Carpenters, but, too gloomy.

Well, now I will have to live with the error of my ways.

It is a very romantic spot and I love it because it is so safe down by the waterfront, unlike so many cities. I think you would like it there and the culture. Next time, I will check with you one the music. I hate when I get it wrong. :)

!tip

Well teasing you about your music is all I got! I mean after all I am the fool stuck in 15 degree weather while you have 87!

But , feel free to check in any time. You know I have good taste...

Okay, well I will take that and raise you one!

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as bad music, just music that is not my taste or yours. I do like your selection a lot better but I was at a loss when it came to choosing music to go with this. That and the slow internet didn't help too much but I did like the raindrops in the beginning so it is what I chose. Better luck next time!

One doesnt have to be better. I like them both. I just like to add to the conversation by throwing in my selection, albeit unsolicited lol. You know I can help but to ramble on with you lol...even with bad internet LOL

Yes. The bad internet does make for a challenge, but, life is full of challenges and if that is my biggest one, I had better consider myself lucky!

Right?

As for me, sea, sand and salt? Oh, yes!!! Especially hearing the kids are getting snow... I thought about weeping for a moment, but, no, it didn't happen. :)

We both have had our share of being on the other side of that shovel. Yes!

Yes well Princess I am sure you will weep for my misery here in the land of endless ice and snow. Nothing but grey and white...

20190212_132038.jpg

Nooo! No weeping permitted, old man! Look!!! Clouds for a moment!!! :)

Thnaks for taking us away on an adventure to there and the market even witht he rain I wish I was there

Here is my post for this week
https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@tattoodjay/market-friday-downtown-milford

Well, I have to admit, even the rain was nice. Walking in the rain can be refreshing and I do love the vibe of Old San Juan. It was a blip on my screen for vacation time, but, anytime spent there is always worthy.

My kids told me there is snow in the air, so I believe that I will delay coming home for a while. Snow?? We haven't had hardly any all winter, now they want it???

Thank you for joining #MarketFriday, JJ @tattoodjay It is always fun to see you in the tag! I got a call in the middle of the night from the NCR saying that work was delayed for two hours for the Washington, DC area... I couldn't see any weather for yesterday, but, I don't think I'll worry about it. ;)

!tip

Yes on a warm day I do love the rain, it is so refreshing,
I do not blame you delaying your return today we are getting snow and icy rain, glad I am off for the day, Intentionally, I didn't want to have to deal with clearing snow and ice off the car when I got home tonight and rick pulling my stitches in my back, funny thing is I wasted to a degree a days leave the office called a snow day, about two hours after I put in for the leave today LOL

Always a pleasure to support your Market Friday which reminds me I must start preparing some photos for this week

Oh, seriously! You got punished! Doesn't that figure? If you hadn't called in for the leave, they would have had work. You need to try that out on a sunny day! ;)

I can't believe the snowwwwww! My sister is truly crying! Crying! She has hated snow since she was a little kid and STILL lives in Connecticut!

not really punished just bad timing on my part, I should have left it to the morning to decide i guess, but Ohh well at least I didn't have to do work stuff i could have a real day off and chill, its a mix of icy rain and snow out the window at the moment but starting to warm up and will switch to rain so hopefully its all clear in the morning :)

Oh, next time, right?? Because we all know there will be the next snow. March is so notorious for that!

Next time I will leave it till the morning to decide as I usually do LOL
teaches me to be proactive LOL

What a fabulous photo collection! The colorful architecture reminds of some places here in Mexico and Cuba and the fort looks like the Citadel of St. Tropez :) Thank you for bringing some sweet memories to me and for showing us around this wonderful place. Have a great weekend Denise!

Thank you so much! It is always a pleasure to visit the Caribbean! The colors reflect the joyful nature of the people! I love to be in the middle of the street with singing and dancing going on, usually for no reason.

It is such a wonderful way to live! Happiness breeds happiness!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Looking forward to some more nice weather and the diving part of the trip! :)

Thanks for dropping by #MarketFriday!

I shall keep this short, my friend, as you are traveling, and have about 17 gazillion comments to reply to below. So nice to be popular ( :
As for the riddle, it's ANYTHING. Once you give it away, you don't have it anymore. (I didn't look, so if that's right (RIGHT!!), I didn't cheat ( :
Hope your trip is going well. Sure looks and reads as if. Have fun, and stay dry. Sounds like that's easy, just wait until the sun comes back out. Oh, the luxury. Cheers.

Oh, let me see!! It is actually a secret, but, technically, you are right. I just have to give you a star too! I mean, when you are right, you are right, even if that is not the original answer.

You know that teachers probably thought you were the smart kid, right?

Oh, yes... much like Florida. Give it a minute and the rain will pass. It has been sunshiney wonderful, DD @ddschteinn! I hear that there will be snow today (again) so it makes being away so much more pleasurable, knowing you are missing it.

Thank you! You are awesome!

Wow, you've got some awesome photos here! That first shot of the cobblestones taken at a low angle... that's great! The sunset, and especially that walkway with the streetlamps - I really love that one. Looks like an exciting market, Denise! Wishing you a happy week... voted and resteemed :-)

Hey, Keith! @keithnoone Thank you so much for the wonderful word and for the upvote and resteem! It is much appreciated and I haven't been on here much, but, I needed to come back out of vacation mode for a few and check out the missed #MarketFridays. I think I have been to a Market every single day. One was so very awesome, very locial in flavor on one of the smaller islands, but, the tourists have taught them well and they wanted to be paid for each picture. Didn't have enough money on me for that and the $$ were too far away to fetch. Some things are better served to memory.

It was an economically challenged town, so I get it, but, I didn't get any. :(

Thank you! It has been a nice week and looking forward to some nice weather ahead!

You got yourself a great market this week. How beautiful! I feel the same as you about those birds. Well maybe not the same. I am certain those birds are stresseda d not well taken care of. What a sad like for creatures who long so be free and who live so long. It is terrible the way people treat animals for our entertainment among other things. But I digress.... the umbrellas and cobblestones of San Juan look gorgeous. Especially with the colorful stucco walls of nearby buildings. I wonder if the fort was the filming location for the end of Romancing the Stone? Such an 80’s classic!

Here is my humble market Friday. Hidden between a lot of other babblings. ☺️

Enjoy your travel!

Oh, you better believe I feel the same way about those beautiful birds! You can tell they are stressed as they are picking their feather out themselves plus I am sure they are not well taken care of! What animal wants to like that? I love watching them fly free in their habitat, screaming their song for all to hear, or their sounds! It is such a beautiful sight!

Romancing the Stone was filmed in a few places, including Veracruz, Mexico (Fort of San Juan de Ulúa); and Huasca de Ocampo, Mexico. Parts of the film were also shot in Snow Canyon, Utah. So, no, but, I can definitely see some of the similarities.

The building here and all over the Caribbean islands are always so colorful. To me. it reflects the happy nature of the people, matter what their circumstances seem to be, they always have a smile and pleasant words for all. If we could all be that way, what a wonderful world we would have.

Thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! It is always a joy to see you in the tag!
