MarketFriday: A Family Legacy

in #marketfriday6 years ago (edited)

I had to run to the big city today, which entails going through the little city and States Produce Stand. I remember seeing it when we used to drive this way once a month to see patients at satellite clinics as far back as 1996. I really do not know how long it has been in business, but that is a while.

A local tradition continues!

By the time I started shopping there around 2011, the person running the place was a fairly young woman, 40's I would guess. She tried to give local farmers an outlet to sell their goods in addition to keeping a supply of popular items shipped in. She was a fun lady and she is sorely missed. She died suddenly last year, no one was sure the stand would be open this year.

She had a great sense of whimsy.

I was very pleased to see that it opened recently and had time to stop in today. It is not fully stocked yet, but it looks like they are continuing the tradition. This time of year they offer really nice garden starts, always healthy and happy looking.

Meticulously tended starts always have a better "vibe!"

I have sworn off gardening this year, I just have too many things on my plate. These little portulaca were just irresistable though. I have one spot where I KNOW no one will be running heavy equipment: Next to the power pole!

Some of you are coming with me!

The only produce I bought was a bit of local asparagus. It is the tail end of the season for it, I just had to have one more nice helping. There was not a lot in yet, but I overheard the very young woman at the checkout saying she was trying to contact all the old suppliers so I hope the next time I am by this is packed to the rafters like it used to be.

A little sparse, but it is early in the season.

NAMASTE!

Sort:

What a fascinating store, it's such a shame the lady that ran it passed away - but at least the tradition is being kept up by new owners.

It is touching what can make you "famous" in these tiny towns. When she died, the entire region mourned, I am sure she never knew how many of us appreciated her shop and her attitude.

Love that store!!! I, of course, was too late to post my Market Friday post - but at least I have all the pics in a file now.

Yeah, I TRY to do current stuff for a sort of silly reason... @longsilver and I share a camera, and so I like to get the post done before I forget which one of us took the shot LOL! But we have a pact, if we screw it up we are never telling anyone... SHHH!! ;)

hahahaha - good pact. I won't tell either :)

You're a good friend!

That is quite a #marketfriday post @fishyculture. I hope the young woman's legacy lives on and the market is thriving again soon. You and I both will have to enjoy gardening vicariously this season! I am looking forward to seeing your power poll all dolled up with blooms! Please post pics of your little flower garden when it's up & running. 🙏 namaste

You know, I realized as I made the post I should have snapped a pic of them transplanted. Now I have to let them recover from the shock or it will just be a sad pic... lol! But I will post one, probably take a couple days for them to perk back up!
THANK YOU for your friendship, you are a jewel!

Haha! The ins and outs of being a blogger 🤣. I was admiring the neighbours flowers which just seem to POP so much more then my own. Her secret is miracle grow. Shuddha known! I will pass on the poison thanks. If it looks too good to be true---it probably is. I stick to fish fertilizer, coffee grounds and for the tomatoes -egg shells for now. I hope i don't miss your post with the flower update!! I feel joyful interacting with you!! Thanks for being a gem yourself! 💖

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

I love and have portulaca, these are beautiful. The bathtub full of flowers is so cool and funny, it's a great idea!

Paired with the old hand wash tub, to me it implies "Screw housework, I am going to the garden" lol!

Exactly as you say :D Too bad no one is going to do the housework in the meantime :))

Love these local businesses. Commitment to the community. Wonderful unique displays. Responsive to what the community wants and needs. So many things that the big box retailers will never understand...

You know a store is doing it right when you want to go there just to walk around. When you enjoy the experience...separate from the purchase.

Enjoying the experience - good point. I dread shopping for the most part, but I have found my little "homey" places here and there!

Very nice! Ohhh you make me miss the garden center I used to take my grandmother to, every spring (and to a lesser extent, summer). The begonias would be in by now and we'd be planting some sweet peas any day. I sure miss her! Thanks for the memory.
Oh yeah, asparagus. The "stinky pee"* vegetable! I love it.

  • not for everybody

:) You always wrote such sweet things about her, I miss her too!
Thanks for your support, my friend!

I love these kind of stops! I am so sorry that your young woman suddenly passed. Every day is a gift.

That tubful of petunias is total whimsey. Ditto with the washtub. OMG. Can you imagine having to do laundry that way? I know my grandmother tells tales of her having to use that on almost a dozen kids and she was grateful because it wasn't the scrubboard.

C;mon Grannie, I know you aren't that old! But, the tale has grown up with her and well... I digress. :)

I am all for the little places where I know the person running it and the people who happen by with some products to sell. I love the thoughts of more farmstands than grocery stores and I adore your post.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to post this and I hope your place grows back to where it once was. Hey, keep that man and his equipment off that portulaca. I have a feeling he won't go near them with a ten-foot pole.

As always, thank you for visiting #MarketFriday! Mwah!

😁Glad you enjoyed it! You have a great eye for "whimsy" so it pleases me to have the "Aunt Tippy Seal Of Silly" lol!
Thanks for keeping this fun gig going!

Is a family member running it? It sounds like they want to carry on the tradition which is great news. Too many little mom and pop places are dying off...

Yeah, I am not sure if it is a daughter or niece, maybe cousin, but there is a STRONG family resemblance and the personal touches that would have been claimed by family members had it sold are all still there. I am too bashful to chat her up, it took me about three years to get to be sort of friends with the other lady! I should have all the details by 2020...

I think I can ait that long...lol I am glad that it went to family and not some corporate conglomerate. I'd hate to see Wal-mart take over like they have so many businesses here.

Ever read Vonnegut? Of course you did. Remember what this "*" meant? Wal-Mart had it on their signs for the longest time, Mark and I always called it "Wal-Mart asshole." LOL!
