Trump Is Asking For A 1999-Style Stock Market Melt-Up
Trump wants a 1% cut in interest rates by the Fed. He feels that since China's market is doing well with low interest rates, that the Fed is mistaken in engaging upon quantitative tightening.
This is irresponsible of the President. If the Fed did this, the market would take off as the President insisits.
The problem is we saw this movie before.
In the late 1990s, Greenspan lowered interest rates 3 time in response to LTCM's collapse. In an effort to provide confidence to the markets, the lowering of rates did just that.
The markets took off in 1999 and 2000. Of course, this did not end well for the markets.
Trump's advice would end up the same way. The market went on an upward path since 2009 and is already overvalued. Another rate cut would only make things much worse in the end.
