Traveling to Mars can be even more deadly than previously thought

NASA's program is to send astronauts to Mars in the next 15 to 20 years. China has plans to send people to Mars between 2020 and 2030, and even Russia has plans to send its astronauts there in the near future.

But a study of the influence of radiation on living organisms may shed new light on the danger that will hurt people during the flight to the Red Planet. The main problem is, of course, the cosmic rays .

They are high energy atomic and subatomic particles that are emitted by exploding stars, black holes, and other powerful sources of radiation in space. They can damage DNA, increase the risk of cancer, cause visual cataracts, cause damage to the nervous system, and cause many types of blood circulation problems that can be very dangerous for astronauts.

Astronauts are exposed much more to the strong radiation than the humans on Earth because the atmosphere of the planet absorbs much of the harmful radiation.
