Giving Up Cable For Netflix

in #media6 years ago

A recent survey that was conducted by Cowen Inc., a financial research firm, suggests that a growing number of people in the U.S. today are making the decision to move away from broadcast television in favor of alternative entertainment options like Netflix. With U.S. consumers, it's reported that Netflix is the top choice at the moment for viewers watching at home.

It's suggested that their spending on new and original programming for 2018 might surpass $13 billion.

The average cable and satellite TV bills for Americans back in 2017, were estimated to cost around $100.98 and when you compare that to Netflix prices that are around $10 per month, there's a clear financial incentive that many might have to make the switch.

It's estimated that the average person living in the U.S. spends half their day staring at a screen.

In the recent survey from Cowen, they asked at least 2,500 respondents about their own watching preferences and roughly 27 percent said that they preferred Netflix; it's the service they used most frequently. Following Netflix, basic cable came in 2nd place, with about 20 percent of respondents selecting that option, followed by broadcast television at 18 percent.

Netflix was seen to be even more popular with younger viewers, between the ages of 18 to 34, at least 40 percent of them said they preferred Netflix for their daily source of content. Basic cable and broadcast television didn't follow either, they preferred Youtube to both.

The number of people, who prefer to cut the cord and opt for alternative entertainment streaming services, continues to grow.

A previous study on the topic, conducted by the Pew Research Center, found that many Americans would be ready to give up their television entirely--roughly 31 percent. However, there are millions who still aren't ready to part with it just yet, roughly 55 percent suggested that they would face difficulty in parting with the tube indefinitely.

More people today are deciding to let go of the television because they can easily consume media from a variety of other sources like Youtube or news websites etc, using their phone or laptop. Netflix is making that easy for them, with ideas like their smart downloads tool that enables viewers to have their favorite television shows automatically deleted from their phone and replaced with a new episode, after they've finished watching the content.

Millions of Netflix subscribers are located in the United States, but their list of international subscribers has been growing, as there has been growing adoption of streaming services in other countries. They've managed to establish lucrative markets in places like Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.

It's estimated that they've got over 100 million subscribers now around the world. But they're still spending a great deal on creating their content which means that they've got a lot of debt. Netflix previously admitted in a letter to shareholders in 2017 that they would continue to spend lavishly on producing new content and that this would mean staying in the negative for years to come.

I left cable for Netflix and Kodi... saved a ton of money. And if push came to shove I could ditch the Netflix and use the Kodi for free.

Actually did that recently because it was costing to much and honestly it was 💯 percent good decision .

I cut the cable a long time ago and haven't looked back.
Content is getting far superior on streaming services and I hate commercials :)

I am not in the USA but as long as possible we can acquire another cheaper cable because it is necessary without cable we can not be

The world is changing fast and so the T.V. business. Netflix has been a great choice because it gives the power of watch whatever you want at any given time.

I haven't had cable in almost 12 years. It's strange going somewhere with cable tv and having to watch commercials. Aside from YouTube ads on my phone that I can't block (I block them on my computer) I hardly see commercials.

Here in Venezuela until now the cable is not so expensive and has good programming, let's hope and continue to maintain it as the economy is a disaster, excellent article @doitvoluntarily

I haven't had cable in years and years, but my former cable company charges me a fortune for the internet now. I also pay for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu. I still get discs from Netflix, because they don't stream nearly every film that is available in the DVD library. It ends up being the same as when I paid for cable and occasionally rented movies. I don't even watch much of it, my wife does. I pay for YouTube Red, because I watch that and I hate ads. Anyway, it costs about the same, but the convenience of watching things on-demand is priceless.

Go on with your bad self! Netflix has a
whole tonne of awesome programming!

I don't have either. What does that make out of me?
