A/V Talk: You Can Polish a Turd...

in #media5 years ago (edited)

Anybody who has worked for clients in the audio/video field has almost certainly heard the following line before:

“Can’t we just fix it in post?”

heavy cringe

Yes, okay, media editing programs nowadays have tools designed to tackle any issue with your product that you might have, such as editing out entire unwanted objects from video footage or taking bad frequencies out of a mix. These are useful tools, and if one has access to them, they might as well use them.

However!!!

The access to these tools does not mean that there is not a need to gather optimal data! An A/V editor could spend ages fixing your vocal take or fixing lighting and colors in post, OR... You could just get a good take! Yes, I could spend hours in an autotune plugin tuning your voice up, OR... You could learn to sing!

There is no doubt that every A/V nerd would love to have the best toys to play with, all of the best “SoundGood-izers” and Magic Wands. These tools come in handy, but require so much more work than just recording something properly.

Do it right. You can polish a turd... Well, you know the rest.

You can polish a turd. But it's still a turd.

Ding ding ding!

Edited slightly to reflect the true saying, I don’t know why I originally wrote it as you can’t, lol...

I think the original saying is, "You can't polish a turd." I've just probably thought way too much about it. 🤣
