Measles-Rubella combined vaccine providing cross immunity against Nipah virus infection?

in #medicine6 years ago (edited)

We had a recent outbreak of Nipah virus in Kerala, India. And a peculiar observation was that the virus did not infect children under 15 years. Is this because a recent mandatory measles-rubella immunization campaign that was held in October 2017 gave some sort of cross immunity?

Out of 18 cases tested positive for Nipah, 16 people died. As you can see, the mortality rate is alarmingly high. And the stange fact is that none of the cases where under 15 years of age.

Is this really coincidence or is the Measles-Rubella vaccine given to all children under 15 years in November 2017 giving any sort of protection against Nipah to these kids?
