Every 70s Metal Album Rated and Reviewed Part 8 - 1979 (Part 1 of 3)steemCreated with Sketch.

in #metal5 years ago (edited)

Now we have finally arrived at the last year, 1979. There are a lot more albums here obviously, with 16 total releases with a few more debuts from future big names!

Accept - Accept

16 January 1979
Accept's first album.
My Rating: 6/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 2.83
Primary Genre: Heavy Metal
Secondary Genre: Hard Rock

Accept's self-titled debut is thoroughly...alright. The riffs and production are alright and the vocals are quite good, but nothing really stands out here.

Lovedrive - Scorpions

25 February 1979
Scorpion's sixth album.
Scorpion's second metal album.
My Rating: 7/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 3.78
Primary Genres: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal

Starts off with Loving You Sunday Morning which is a great ballad with crunchy guitars and some fantastic soloing. Coast to Coast is a great hard rocking instrumental track, Can't Get Enough is an intense fast-paced piece and Holiday is a great atmospheric and rocking ballad. Lovedrive is a bit less metal than Taken By Force (which I loved) but still a great hard rock/heavy metal album and I really enjoyed a lot of it.

Overkill - Motörhead

24 March 1979
Motorhead's second album.
Motorhead's highest rated album.
Number 1 for 1979 metal.
Number 7 for 1979.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 3.91
Primary Genres: Heavy Metal, Hard Rock
Secondary Genre: Speed Metal

Motörhead's highest rated album starts off with the absolute classic title track which is a fantastic dirty speed metal masterpiece and the clear highlight of the album with some delicious riffs in it. Overkill isn't as Speed Metal as expected from Motörhead but instead there is really great dirty heavy metal riffing throughout the album. Metropolis has a fantastic solo and Limb from Limb is an awesome closer to the album.

From the Black World - Nekomono

25 April 1979
Nokemono's only album.
My Rating: 7/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 3.22
Primary Genre: Heavy Metal
Secondary Genre: Hard Rock

The Japanese throws me off a bit but once I got past it I enjoyed this album a lot. The Closed City is a great classic heavy metal track. Lost Love starts with an awesome acoustic intro and then proceeds into another great heavy metal track, Big Wednesday has iffy vocals but some really excellent solos and Path on the Ashes is a fantastic ballad. So overall, this album is pretty good, and better than I expected.

Saxon - Saxon

21 May 1979
Saxon's first album.
My Rating: 7/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 3.20
Primary Genres: NWOBHM, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock

Saxon's self-titled debut is incredibly short, coming it at just 28 minutes! After the mediocre opening track we get a fantastic quick instrumental. Everything else kind of blends together but it is all really quite solid. It's a good album!

Survivors - Samson

June 1979
Samson's first album.
My Rating: 7/10
RYM Score (As of this post): 3.11
Primary Genres: Hard Rock, NWOBHM

Tomorrow or Yesterday is the clear highlight here, a great lengthy ballad with fantastic riffing. Koz is a great song too, with a galloping main riff and atmospheric synths and...a kazoo? Survivors is another solid NWOBHM album.

So that's the first 6 albums of 1979 done, 10 more to go! Thanks for reading!
