The Skill Spillover Effect

in #mindset-life5 years ago

When you are in the process of learning anything new, you will have the tendency to multitask.

And who can blame you?

You've pretty much been taught to multitask since growing up.

You weren't taught only 1 subject to master in school.

Rather, you were taught 5-7 subjects throughout the week.

Math, reading, history, social studies etc.

So what happens when you get out there in the real world?

You think more is more!

So you study left & right, trying to apply away.

After a while, you try picking up so many new skills, try to practice all of them, get overwhelmed, and quit.

Sound familiar?

I bet it does...

But you don't have to fall into this ill fate like so many people do.

Rather, be the person who does the exact opposite.

Go all in on one skill & then allow the skill spillover effect to take place.

A few years ago, I decided to go all into Toastmasters & learn the art of public speaking.

As I worked on the public speaking skill, I was able learn the nuances behind the skill set.

I learned the art of building a speech, giving an evaluation, studying body language, practicing different speech types etc.

Dug the hole deep rather than a bunch of surface level holes.

Well, its been a few years since & I can confidently that public speaking has made me a better writer.

'A better writer??'

Yes.

That's the skill spillover effect.

As I was developing a strong understanding of public speaking, I was working on my communication muscle as well. So when I began the writing journey later on in my life, it was much easier to structure thoughts. The skill had spilled over.

Which is why you need to ask yourself the question:

Am I doing too much?

Because it feels good to do a lot, I get it.

But you may be delaying your ultimate rise.

Rather than doing a shitty job at a bunch of things, get good at one thing & expand from there.

That is how the game was meant to be played!

If one of the skills you are trying to develop is public speaking, then I'm your guy.

After years of public speaking experience, I can help you eliminate exactly what not to do so you can exercise what you should do.

Public speaking is a mega skill that will have you communicating your message harmouniously with the world.

Get on stage & show your presence when many cower at the sight of it.
