The unexpected is never expected! It has a habit of surprising or shocking.

We like to live in a world of certainty, being in control of what happens and when it happens. We like to feel in control emotionally, mentally, physically and financially as well as being in control of our homes. We even believe that we can control how our kids grow up by applying sensible assertive parenting, setting boundaries and expectations.

Is this naive or not?

It is a symptom of being human! In about 99 percent of the time this happens, we live harmoniously enjoying the expected whether it be the daily routine work and home or the carefully organised holidays.

But, there is 1 percent of the time when the unexpected has the power to surprise or shock. Everyone has a story relating to the unexpected ranging from the dramatic 'oh no' it can't be to the happy arrival of a bunch of flowers.

There are degrees off the worse unexpected. Firstly there is the unexpected knocks our socks off news of a very close friend or loved one being diagnosed with a stage four malignant cancer or being killed in a car accident. They are the moments that never leave the memory, forever etched in the brain.

Nothing really prepares us for the unexpected emotional upset related to a loved one whether it be a partner, child, parent or sibling.

Another worse unexpected is sudden financial loss especially when one is ready to retire.

What about the unexpected when at the airport an airline worker tells you that you haven't paid for your ticket and if you want to board the plane you must pay for another ticket. While you process the shocking news you hand your card!

No-one is able to say with any confidence that he/he is prepared for the unexpected because it is sure to come back and bite them.

Like everyone else, the only unexpected that I like are the happy ones, the delivery of lowers, the little gift arriving in the mail or the news of a new baby, etc.

The surprise associated with joy is so much easier to process than the shock associated with hurt and grief. And we think that we are in control of everything in our lives ..... think again.

Cheers and blessings

haha! so true again angiemitchell, at least as we get older hopefully we learn to handle the bad news without having some kind of breakdown.

Haha, yes janton, so agree. But, there is nothing worse than getting the news from the police e of a husband's death at midnight.

Howdy again today angiemitchell...oh that would be a nightmare. Has that happened to you or someone in your family?

Yes sadly. It is coming up to 8 years and my sister still has a sadness about her.

Oh, that happened to your sister? That's so sad. I'm sorry to hear that. She has good family support at least.

Yes she has, it makes all the difference janton. Life throws us some tough punches at times.
