Focus for Success Series - Post 2 - Consensus and Momentum
My career evolved in managing rather large projects, most of them technical by nature. Of course, this involved many, many meetings. And, I learned early on that the purpose of a meeting is to generate consensus and momentum. In fact, over the years I developed a presentation around those two items that I believe significantly added to my overall success.
It is difficult to generate consensus around a lot of information, so I learned to identify one key point during each presentation and work to generate consensus on that one item. Partners could remember the one key point and I would hear it repeated throughout the days and weeks. It was a very successful milestone in my career.
At one particular high point in my career, I had about 14 associates working with me to deliver weekly reports that totaled hundreds of pages of data. Which we carefully worked into bound documents for distribution. All well and good, but that is not what the board of directors wanted to see, not really. So, each week I consolidated this enormous amount of facts into a very short summery. And, you guessed it, usually focusing on just one main point. And that was my talking point for the 10 to 15 minutes with the board.
Yes, there were many points in the documentation that could be made, but I focused on the most important item for that week. And received a number of accolades for my work. Or, really my team, because there is no way one person could have sifted through all that data.
Focusing on the one important thing per week allowed me to generate the momentum needed to get things done. And this is what it is all about, having something to show at the end of the day.
So drilling down to the one, most important, thing for that day made everyone happy. Yes, there was a mountain of information. And, yes, we eventually covered a lot of key topics. But focusing on the one thing lead to success after success.
Success is focusing on the one important thing for that day. - Words by Guy Sellars

Dear @guysellars
Yet another excellent publicaion buddy. thanks for sharing your experience.
What did they want to see? Just curious. I'm guessing they needed "conclusions" and some sort of summary?
Yours
Piotr
The best way to describe it is that the board wanted to see a summary of results that met there expectations and/or actionable items, things that needed to be done. But the key was to keep it simple, understandable. Essentially bite size information that was very focused on core business.
