Why Most People Don't Own AssetssteemCreated with Sketch.

Asset

Definition: "Property owned by a person or company, regarded as having value and available to meet debts, commitments, or legacies."

Rich Dad Poor Dad

Assets have the ability to bring you multiple streams of income, grow your net worth, and give you time freedom. If you've read Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad Poor Dad" books, you understand the importance of assets. The majority of people have not read these books, yet to some degree, everyone understands how powerful it is to own a businesses, real estate and other assets.

So why doesn't everyone work hard to earn these assets?

The truth is, assets aren't easy to own. During times of economic prosperity, assets provide income and generally increase in value. However, these assets can also experience times of uncertainty. Stock prices can be extremely volatile, and the companies that these stocks represent can stop paying dividends and even go broke. A small business you operate could be pushed out of the market by a bigger competitor. Commodity prices can drop 10-30% in a single day. Your tenants in your beloved rental property could stop paying rent, or that property could burn down entirely!

With all of this risk, what's the point of even owning assets at all?

My reasoning is, you're not living life to the fullest if you're not taking on risk. In fact, I think you are doing yourself a disservice by avoiding risk. You can apply this thinking to any part of life. Your career, your lifestyle, and your finances.

The money made on your investments will come from finding high value investments, taking risk when others are not willing, and hanging on to those assets for a very long time.

It all comes down to a plan, appetite for risk, and patience.

These principles are very simple, but extremely hard to execute on for a long time.
