Gold, Silver and The Wizard of OZ (or How To Protest Monetary Policy with a Children's Book!)

Source

Did you know that in the original "Wizard of Oz" story, Dorothy's slippers were made of silver?

Source

Why was it changed?

The pressure from the global financial elite to keep the world off a silver standard and to remain on the gold standard!

Source

All but a few individuals aquiesced to this agenda.

One such example is the author of "The Wizard of Oz" - L. Frank Baum, a staunch silver advocate.

Source

If you examine the book carefully, you'll begin to see the cleverly hidden clues (symbols of the story of silver in early America) sprinkled throughout this classic children's tale.

Once recognized, you will see that the book clearly reflects L. Frank Baum's political beliefs and "Pro Silver" monetary philosophy.

Check these videos out.

You'll be entertained with what you'll find.

Enjoy!

After viewing a couple of the above videos, "The Yellow Brick Road" takes on a whole new meaning, no?

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.

In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.

After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.

Since then, he's been a full-time, single papa and actively pursuing his varied passions (Writing, Disruptive Technology, Computer Science and Cryptocurrency - plus more hobbies too boring or bizarre for most folk).

He lives on an island paradise with his teenage daughter, longtime girlfriend and three dogs.

"My mind was a terrible thing to waste..." - JaiChai

Sort:
Fascinating! I've heard of the economic turmoil of the 1800s and the "Free Silver" movement, but never heard of the possible implications (intemtional or not) behind the Wizard of Oz references. Definitely food for thought! Thanks for sharing this with #steemitbloggers 😊

I love how authors are lasting symbols of social feelings during any particular time period. Often, writing is dismissed as simply fiction, but it still manages to tell people much about common sentiments at the time. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for visiting and commenting.

IMHO, all fiction writers know that "fiction" is just a legal avenue (aka plausible deniability) and somewhat safe way to write about their own life experiences and personal thoughts...

May you and yours be well and love life today.

Namaste, JaiChai

That's an interesting way to look at it. I like to write fiction to play with alternate ideas and perspectives, not necessarily my own, but the plausible deniability part is sure nice to have in there!

HUH I can't say I didn't learn something today! Thanks for putting this together - it was a fun read. ✌️

I was once an American Studies teacher, and also spent a lot of academic hours on literary analysis. Your blog intersects both of those areas. One of the reasons I'm interested in the blockchain, in decentralized currency, is because I'm aware of the many financial crises of the past. Not just in the US--across the world, throughout history. The concept of money is very abstract--trust is ephemeral. Once trust is gone, so is the value of money. I'm not convinced The Wizard of Oz is meant to be the kind of literal analogy that some suggest, but this is an interesting way to grab the attention of students, and the general public. Kudos for a fascinating post and for asking readers to think about the basis of currency.

Woah tge authors did a great job in explaining the financial situation in a fun way.

Its shameful how blind I was to this until you brought it up!
Mesmerizing it is how poets and authors have used their platform to bring about much about the reality of their time in a subtle way.
I think its their way of saying "if you are able to get it, then you deserve to get it", in aspects to the camouflaged scoops they talk about.
Thank you @jaichai for such an eyeopening post. You can never stop being awesome!

Many thanks.

I never looked at that movie this way
