WordPress vs steemit: A comparative analysis of the relative precariousness of two online income streams

View this post on Hive: WordPress vs steemit: A comparative analysis of the relative precariousness of two online income streams

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

With more free time you might find a new career or revenue stream that interests you. Have you tried steem gigs?

Actually that's an interesting idea... TBH I had thought about it in the past, I could probably pick up some writing and/ or editing work, but it had dropped off my conscious radar, so I will explore that.

Cheers for the advice!

Karl.

To be honest, I don’t think Jetpack advertising is a good deal for publishers. At least not yet.

Without having looked at your site, and archives, I’m pretty sure that you can improve your funnel, although having 80% of traffic from 20% of posts is actually rather good. The 20% is.

In a previous life I’ve managed a medium-sized indie blog network and most of our sites depended on way less posts than 20% for a larger share (close to 90% sometimes) even. The only exception to that was most of the time content which had gone viral on Stumbleupon and then a site which was often listed on Techmeme. The rest of traffic was mostly new content, which gradually was taken over by so-called sidedoor traffic (Facebook).

I would suggest to consolidate your position in Google by being active on Quora within your niche - check out this awesome post by Neil Patel about generating traffic from Quora - and also to continue spreading your wings. Yes, that includes also guest blogging, if done well it is great profile building, especially in a niche like yours. Platforms like Quora, and niche communities, are key tho. Even forums still do perform well when it comes to defining Google ranking.

Once you’re in it, it’s yours to consolidate that SERP. Most never get in it in the first place. Rock on! \m/

Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it!

I'm sure WP take the lion's share of my advertising revenue - had I known, I would have set up a .org blog rather than a .com blog.

The 80-20 thing was a rough guestimate!

Since you have the domain, you can always go a self-hosted setup. With that comes learning, hassle (maintenance - although it can be made easy but there’s a learning curve to it) though.

I’m not sure how easy it is to transfer the domain to another registrar but I’m sure it’s been done before and is well documented. Shouldn’t be any hassle with a registrar like Namecheap. Make sure to inform yourself well before selecting hosting. Saving on hosting is more often than not the wrong thing to do (definitely don’t go Bluehost). I recommend you find a smaller hosting provider when you want to switch, one who are both independent and pride themselves on their customer service. Lots of review sites where you can find validation of that (don’t fall in the trap of “WP Gurus reviewing hosting”, they use referrals their review is biased to get the referral fee, the bigger in profile they are the higher their monthly revenue).

If you need help with anything, give me a buzz I’m easily reachable/findable under this nickname (add #3007 at end on discord).

Thanks for offering... I might well be in touch,

Karl.

Really detailed analysis. What it boils down to for me is an (at least perceived) greater personal control over the factors affecting my success here vs. on WP.

I think I agree... IF steem holds it's value, and if you're prepared to delegate/ upvote and focus on yourself, then if you invest $10K you're practically guaranteed a $300/ return on that (or there abouts) per month... IF steem holds its value.

Although I've concluded that my best bet is to maintain both, and make them 'support' each other.

How do you go about earning money from Wordpress advertising? I have a wordpress blog I hardly use these days, but I'd happily start it back up if it were an income stream.

With WordPress.com you get the option to switch their advertising program on once you hit 20K views a month, alternatively you can purchase a pro subscription and that allows you to benefit from word-ads, although you probably wouldn't make your money back on the sub with only 20K views a month.

Hmm. Might need to think about starting to post on there again.

You look like you're doing pretty well on here to me!

Although the one big advantage with WP is that you control it, you can organise with pages so give it more structure, change the appearance, edit posts years after you write them, and of course you just keep on earning as those big posts climb the google rankings over the years. And with WP.org you can do even more.

Did I say 'one' advantage?

As far as I support steemiteducation, the functionality here is just hopeless from a student's perspective - I mean I did a post today on WP on 'thoughts on yesterday's AS Sociology exam' - with WP I can go into my page on 'exam advice' and drop in a link to today's post, then go the posts which cover the topics on yesterday's exam and add in links at the top or bottom saying 'to see how this relates to an exam click here' etc. etc.....

Or I can do a quick post on 'crime stats in the news' and then use the same info to quickly update my main post on 'the media and crime' - updating boosts the google ranking and traffic.

You see, steemit's functionality simply cannot compete with WP from a student-user's perspective....

And I can't cash in on each successive cohort of students being exposed to the adverts because of the 7 day payment window.

Yeah, I'm doing pretty well here, and really have way more reader interaction than I ever did on Wordpress. I also seldom topped a hundred views a day on Wordpress.

It depends what you're after - this is much more personal for me on here, and I feel quite cheeky/ blessed (depending on what mood I'm in) that I'm earning anything - WP's more of a professional concern - I have a 'market' - students, and I'm the professional providing a service. Totally different relationship to what I've got with people on here.

This is a much better way of earning an income, because I just write about what interests me. (Although in fairness, pretty much all of substantive chunks of the A-level sociology syllabus interests me, and the exam posts are just easy to bash out, so the other blog is hardly a chore!)

That makes sense, thanks!

I don't know how the Wordpress.com setup works re advertising but would the option of moving to independent hosting and managing your advertising directly be at all workable?

Not at the moment, I'm also in a kind of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it mindset'.... I'm tempted to set up a similar blog for economics and politics and make this a self hosted. org site.... then if the advertising revenue is substantially better I can just migrate the .com blog gradually... all the subjects are interrelated.

Would be interesting to compare the two approaches.

I will do, I'll get back to you in three years once I've built up a third blog!

This is great article comparing the two sir.
To me steemit is still much better and preferable than WordPress.

Thanks...

You can absolutely end up on a google black list, but I doubt it would be an issue for you.

What’s more likely is your seo rankings are vulnerable to updates and factors like frequency of publish.

Keep on keeping on.

I do try and update the major posts on WP (which are pages) on a regular basis - they link to the posts on the blog, so it's necessary for functionality anyway.

I've settled on 4-7 times a week for posting ATM, that goes back up to a solid 7 from August!

I'm not relying on the income long term though, got a few other ideas to get up and running.
