MonoMad Monday: Macro - Buckshot Barnacles

in #monomad6 years ago (edited)

I am sure you know those little things.
When you go to the beech have a look around the rocks that get splashed by the waves or submerged with the tides.

Buckshot Barnacles are so tiny that they seem too look like a very porous rock. But take a closer look. See the little mouth inside their tiny volcanoes? They are just a few mm across and attach so hard, that without some tools you won't be able to remove them. Rocks, beach rubbish, bigger shells - anything will do.

They are related to crabs and lobsters (who would have thought?). When they water level is high enough they stick out their tiny feathery arm to catch all the little plankton they feed on. There are some movies online that show how they do it if you're interested.
