Monomad Challenge; inner city sprawl in Finsbury, North London. //// Question posed at the end on photographing fast moving objects.

in #monomad5 years ago (edited)

Special for @brumest's #monomad photographic challenge.

Urban sprawl

Nothing screams 'inner city sprawl' more than the view of high rise new builds abutting against train tracks.

Then you double down on big city life by framing that view inbetween the horizontal and vertical lines of the track's power lines and pylons.

All up it's a cacophony of straight edges fashioned from steel and concrete that run up and down and from left to right.

If you look to the right you can spot a train. It looks stationary but in fact it was belting along.

I wanted to get the shot of the train whizzing past all blurred up but it was timed a millisecond too quick and the shutter speed didn't create the blurry train effect.

This would have reminded the viewer this is a place of action punctuated by periods of silence and that the view is inversed when seen from inside the train where the passenger feels stationary but the outside world is blurred.

Always next time to catch this moment in the life of the inner city as the moment will repeat again and again...just like a train schedule.

The colour version below

The failed second shot below; I caught the train too late

Any tips from the steemit photo pros on taking motion shots of fast moving objects while simultaneously keeping the background in focus?

hi! a bit strange you got zero comments on your question, its seems a pretty easy, basic one!

what camera do you use?

if its any basic DSLR (or mirrorless) that you have all the needed tools and levers to puch, i mean, you are in charge and can get any adjustments you like, to get wherever you want.... but I dont aware if such a control is possible with smartphone, heh....

ok, what you need is a long shutter speed, long shutter release. This setting is configured in the shooting mode, which is called “shutter priority” (often denoted by the letter T on the camera controls)

Normal frame exposure requires - depending on the lighting of the object - a certain amount of light; the amount of light given to the camera's matrix you can vary by affecting 3 parameters: 1) shutter speed, 2) aperture, 3) sensitivity - ISO.

(1) is considered to be more simple. the simplest thing is to select the "shutter priority" mode and set the shutter speed of 2-3 seconds. the second parameter (the degree of opening of the diaphragm) will be selected by the camera itself, depending on the light condition. at the same time, the ISO parameter remains in the hands of the photographer, which can be varied within certain limits. (more ISO value - more “noise” in the photo and shorter shutter speed. Less ISO - less noise, and a longer shutter speed is required.

For your task, obviously it is better to choose the minimum ISO numbers (like 50, 100, 200).

It is believed, that exposure of 1/30 second is that minimum, that can provide more or less good shot while holding the camera in your hands (without a tripod). Long exposures of more than 1/30 second, made with your hands, easily result in getting everything blurry, not just a moving object :) in order to blur only what you need, you should use either a tripod or a palm rest.

Other options are possible. For example, think about a nightly shot - the object will be well separated from the dark background, and it is easier to achieve such a beautiful 'motion-blurred' result, as you search for.

@ozkdawg

Thanks for the in-depth response. You're a legend.

I hope to head past the same spot again this week.

what? you might be joking, am I a legend among the other 27 plankton larvas? a 51-level legend, haha! very funny.

The photo is fantastic, even if you didn't get the train blur. I know nothing about photography, so I will be no help at all, I'm afraid. I love the intersecting lines, and the black and white makes it much moodier than it is in color.

Thanks @goat-girlz. Your comment is highly appreciated. I'm looking forward to sending you some countryside pics of the British isles soon. But today the city was my muse.

I look forward to seeing them!
