Good luck with your chives.

Basil isn’t a perennial, but if you let it go to seed you can harvest the seeds for your next plants. Oh, and you’ll get far more seeds than from the packet you bought to begin with. You’ll need a plant box or a patch of ground for the seeds. Our basil plant right now has five different seed heads sprouting off of it.

Here’s an article with directions to harvest the seed heads: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/basil/harvesting-basil-seeds.htm

Thanks for the info :)

My partner is a horticulturist, but is currently only here for a few months out of the year so I'm left trying to work out things for myself half the time, so it's very helpful! The only thing I really knew with my basil was to pick the flowers off otherwise the leaves would taste horrible.

But, if you pick the flowers off, you will never get the seed heads. It’s the flowers that go to seed. When the first signs of buds appear, harvest your leaves, then let the flowers bloom on at least some of your plants to get the seeds.
