Is Personal Development Necessary?

I have been doing personal development for a long time and it has always helped me improve my mindset, the way I think, and my life.

Is Personal Development Necessary?

Personal development is not something you see people around you doing. When I try to think of the places I have worked, none of my co-workers of the past were doing personal development. Twenty years ago I didn't do it either and even when I was more or less preaching it the last ten years, nobody seemed to be interested.

"Zig Ziglar? Who is he?"

"Bob Proctor? Never heard of him?"

That's the kind of answers you get when you talk about personal development to your co-workers. At least, that was my experience. It seems like people are in the comfort of their job and monthly salary, and think that they are so perfect that they don't need any personal development.

It's not that I want to judge anyone, but when you listen to these personal development speakers I mentioned, and those that are less well-known, they can really help you improve your life, even if it is only helping you to have less anxiety, be better at communication or just feel better in your head.

I am not talking of personal development to own 10 companies with a thousand employees and be financially very successful, but the kind that can help you progress in life at your own pace, helping you to live life better every day.

When I was still in a job, I would not have been able to go through every day without personal development. Not that I hated my job, but I needed more than staying in the daily routine and just not learning anything anymore. I had a 40-minute drive in the morning and more than one hour in the evening and during that time, for at least five years, I turned off the radio and listened to motivational speeches, success talks, and a lot of things to shape my mindset.

In addition of the audio, I read lots of books. You may be interested to read a post I wrote on another blog 4 years ago: "My Mindset & Self-Development Library"

I read all the books there at least twice and many more that are not in the list.

I now have a lot of books I still want to read in my wish list on Amazon, but even if I do not have a job, I have difficulty to find the time to read. I must give up something else to have time for this again.

Three months ago I wrote this post, "20 Books I Want to Read in 2018!" and since then I have only started one book and it's not even in the list. Someone suggested a book that I bought and that's what I'm reading: "The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology."

This is why I find it easier to listen to audio because you can really boost your personal development fast when you are doing something else like exercising, cooking, ironing, etcetera.

Personal development covers a lot of areas and even reading books about "How to be a better husband" or "How to communicate effectively" will improve your life more than reading the latest novel.

So, to answer my own question, "Is personal development necessary?"

I think personal development is necessary.

What do you think?

What have you been doing for your personal development lately?

I hope that this is useful for you if you are interested in personal development.

One of my most profound personal development periods came when I was nineteen. I was taking college course's through a federal program for clerical training. One of the courses was interpersonal communications, they used a book called Looking In Looking Out. At the end of the course we had to write a essay on how we thought the course helped us. At the time I had spent three years in a relationship that I had become dissatisfied with over time, that book gave me the courage to decide to overcome whatever challenges came my way to go it on my own. A couple days before I moved out I made a list of the things I wanted to accomplish in my life, which was way more then he ever wanted to do. I mean during that relationship there probably was a time I would have married him but he didn't see any need to get married, he didn't see any need to buy a home someday, his family had all been renters, it was good enough for them it was good enough for him. One day he came home from work and I was moving out, then he wanted to get married...lol. I told him it was to late, I made my list of things I wanted to do in my life and marrying him wasn't one of them. He told me I'd never amount to nothing being a woman. Well I did everything but one thing on that list and that was to have a really nice dinette set for my dining room in the house that I would own one day. (I know that's sort of a silly thing to have on a list, the only thing I can think that compelled me to write it down was my fascination growing up with antique dining room sets)...and the main reason I don't have one is because my dining room was the kids play room and now the grand kids play area. I got a triple A plus on that report, the teacher told me she had no idea how strongly her class had motivated me.
