WHAT IS THE ATTENTION ECONOMY?

Before we delve into the attention economy let's find out the meaning of attention first.

Attention is notice taken of someone or something; the regarding of someone or something as interesting or important.
Dictionary.com

Hence in essence once you regard someone or something as important, you are paying attention to such a thing. Now on the gainful side, it therefore means that attention is always positive. I mean who doesn't want to feel important.

What if this whole attention ideology could become something worth more than just a word? What if attention becomes money?

As we all know, money is a generally accepted means of removing the value of an asset. The financial value of an asset determines its importance alot of times.

Money can then be used to define the level of attention. Example if a billionaire mentions you positively in his autobiography, you are damn sure that you will be worth much more than your initial worth. It therefore means that he paid you some attention which can then be translated into money.

Let's take the winner of Big Brother Naija as another example. Miracle was given attention by BBN due to their links with DSTV. In essence, he was seen by the whole nation. This translated into gifts and even a hosting by his state governor. Infact you cannot under estimate attention.

This is the whole essence of the attention economy. Let's look for a standard explanation from Wikipedia:

"...in an information-rich world, the wealth of information means a dearth of something else: a scarcity of whatever it is that information consumes. What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it"

Attention in this sense is actually an asset. It's an asset because its scarce and has value. Scarcity of attention is related to TIME & BRAIN CAPACITY.

Humans have limited time as well as brain capacity. There's only so much you can do while awake. Hence you only need to do the important things. In economics, it's referred to as Scale of preference. The Opportunity cost is the other alternative that was forgone in order to give attention to something much more valuable at any given time.

Yesterday, I talked about time management. Learning how to manage our time we'll is the first secret of being successful. Giving attention based on your whims and caprices are not going to be sustainable on the long run.

WHAT IS YOUR ATTENTION WORTH?

Start thinking like a billionaire. Imagine what it would take you to get a minute of Dangote's time. Just imagine it for a minute. This is because his time is a very valuable asset. He's one of the richest men in Africa because of his allocation of his scarce time resource to money-making ventures.

Many waste time on other social media paying their attention to things that are not remotely worth a dime of their attention. Even here on Steemit, many are yet to determine what and who should consume their attention.

Until you answer the above question, your time will still be worth $nothing. Play your life like a chess. Eliminate those things or people who are not adding value to you. Value can be defined in any way you want to!

Time is an asset. Time has value. This is a principle we were not told from the very beginning

What we give our attention to really matters. The more attention we give to something that higher it's value. Just like BBN which you talked about, the whole event was a success because people gave attention to it this driving up it's value. There are so many reality show out there but they don't get popularity because nobody gives attention to them.
