Suddenly Seventeen: Would You Like Your 17 Yr Old Self?

Well, I just watched a 2016 Chinese movie, with English subtitles of course. Yes it's a mainland China movie. Blame it on @junebride. Hahaha. Not that it's bad though, it's a good movie. It's a different take on the age swap movies like 17 Again or 13 Going on 30.

Movie Premise/Summary

28 yr old Liang Xia is still not married after 10 yrs of being with her boyfriend. In 10 years she was promised a marriage and yet she didn't get it. Heartbroken, she stress eats while watching TV. And look, a commercial pops up magically after the TV had a sudden reception problem. Buy some magic chocolates and you'll feel younger and happier! She buys a box and voila! After their break up she ate one piece and hello 17 yr old Liang Xia in the 28 yr old body. Thus begins our movie adventure.

The Story

Ah yes, it's a wonderful concept to think about. In the movie, the adult her have lost herself and her dreams. When "Little Liang" comes around because of the "magic" chocolates, all her fun and amazing self comes out and brings out her past talents and abilities that have been held back by the boyfriend.

Watching it makes me realize, sometimes it's sad when we look at our present selves in the eyes of our younger selves. Personally though, I like myself now than my younger self. My younger self was smart but stupid and clueless. Haha. Sorry my younger self, but it's true. Well okay maybe I'm exaggerating but you know what I mean. I've learned a lot over the years and I wouldn't trade it for being who I am now. Even though my life now isn't perfect too.

Think about it. How far have we come? Are we where we wanted to be? Are we here now because we wanted to be here? And yet, this post isn't about you or me... this is about the movie. Hehe.

Let's go more into my review shall we?

The Actors

Ni Ni, the actress who played Liang Xia is a very good actress in this movie. Not that I've seen any other movie of hers but this one is perfect because she definitely captured the essence of a teenager.

Maybe I haven't grown up that much because I kinda prefer to act like my younger self sometimes. It's just so sad having to be mature all the time. I mean, where's the fun? The adult world is always no fun, no fun, no fun. Yes there is adult fun but alas dear youth... One cannot afford to act young forever.

Supporting actors did a good job too. They acted like the normal age appropriate characters that they are. Character development is ok as well.

The ex/boyfriend is played by Chinese actor Wallace Huo. It's the first time I see him and in a movie too. Oh my he looks really good. :) Haha. I like his looks more than the young guy Little Liang fell for.

Production Design

Oh I love it. The art in the movie is so lovable. It's not too cute but it's girly and lovely in a Chinese way. You know how Chinese paintings are always mostly lovely right? I mean, look at this, the wall art of Little Liang.

This is Little Liang's portrait of Yan, the young guy she got involved with. You know what was used for this? As far as I know, it's supposedly eye shadow make up and eye liner. Lol.

So maybe, maybe my younger self would dream of something like this movie, the me now won't. Haha. We'd think of each other like we're crazy for not taking advantage of our situations, much like Liang in the film. :P My younger self loved art more than I do now, just like Little Liang.

Looks nice right? Ah to make art when in the depths of a feeling...

Also because I've never been anywhere else than in the Philippines, it's nice to see modern buildings and what the night life in China is like. I know how it looks like here in the PH so it was cool to see what it is like there in 2016. Even though of course I'm sure it looks a whole lot better and nicer since it's in a movie.

The Music

The soundtrack sounds amazing. Everything is refreshing, reminiscent, sad and of course modern and pop. The songs and musical interludes in the movie fit the moods perfectly.

Because I don't understand anything, I can only comment on the melody and how it sounds. Here are two songs in the movie soundtrack for your listening pleasure.

Verdict

You know what, since we have an upcoming Korean movie remake of Miss Granny (which has been remade into different movies in various countries) starring Sarah Geronimo, I think Suddenly Seventeen also deserves a Filipino movie remake. Haha. I think Jericho Rosales would be the perfect guy for the boyfriend, same age as Wallace Huo. And Daniel Padilla would be best for the young guy she falls for. As for the lead actress... I think Ms. Universe Pia Wurtzbach would be great if she can pull it off. Why? Because she's 28 until September this year.

As for the director, it has to be someone who does indie movies too aside from mainstream ones. These days, Pinoy Indie films are the best aside from some mainstream films. Aside from On the Job (Buy Bust I heard is probably good too?), I don't think there's any other amazing Pinoy mainstream movie out there. Although Magnifico is good as well. Maybe Bb. Joyce Bernal can direct it.

The screenwriter though, I dunno if Ms. Michiko Yamamoto would be up for a romantic comedy drama movie remake. As far as I know she can make or write amazing original screenplays for movies, why should she make a remake, right?

It would be fun to watch a Philippine version though. I wonder what the story would be. Hahaha. It would be more fantastic than the original if Ms. Yamamoto writes it. Maybe. Hehe.

Wait, where's the movie verdict, you say? Well, it's good for some reminiscing. If you want a light-hearted and fun enough movie, go watch it.

As for the rating, from a range of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, I'd give it an 8. :)

_{(And because of this movie, I think I'm finally going to watch Buy Bust in theaters. And then MI wherever it's still on.)}
