Series Review: Doom Patrol

Apart from the hype around the final series of Game of Thrones, TV has been pretty quiet, there has been literally nothing worth watching lately apart from the new Cherynobl series which after 3 episodes I'm pretty into right now. I'll probably put together a review once the mini-series is complete.

It's no secret that I am a DC fan, I make no effort to hide that fact and so I'm going to give DC as many chances as they need to piss away their IP on poorly executed concepts. I really enjoyed the Titan series on the DC network so when Doom Patrol rolled around I was expecting more of the same but boy was I surprised.

What is Doom Patrol about

Doom Patrol is pretty much DC's version of the X-men except they are way more quirky and outlandish. The story centres around a team of traumatized superheroes, each of whom has suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and living as outcasts.

The members of the team have found their purpose through The Chief and have come together to investigate some of the world's weirdest phenomena. After The Chief mysteriously disappears, though, the reluctant heroes find themselves having to work together to achieve an actual goal and enter the real world.

What I thought of Doom Patrol

Yes it's another comic book adaptation, yes it's another superhero story but instead of the classic ultra cool look at the genre doom patrol is dark, gritty and sort of a dark comedy. The characters may have powers but they are bumbling idiots with serious character flaws that make for an interesting watch.

The dialogue is catchy and the humour is pretty sharp as for the action, it's pretty lacklustre along with the CGI.

The show is dark, humorous, edgy and doesn't take itself too seriously. It does sometimes suffer from the endless introspection of pained and agonising characters but offers something different and I think it's still worth a watch. While some Episodes were a bit of filer overall I really enjoyed the show and I give it a solid 7 metahumans out of 10
