Film review: Overlord

in #movie5 years ago (edited)

Today I'm going to be talking about one of my favorite movies that was released in 2018, a film that probably went under a lot of your guys's radars (Due to the fact that everyone is too busy rubbing one out to the thought of Ant-man in Thanos rectum). It's called Overlord. Overlord was definitely a dark horse of sorts in terms of movies, with one of the more odd origins of film development. It was originally announced as a part of the Cloverfield movie series (Remember that fucking mess? Suck my soggy nuts, Cloverfield Paradox). This gives a few different meanings, such as that the film could have possibly been a giant heap of shit like the last Cloverfield Universe movie was (Seriously, you sucked harder than a clown sucking the fart out of a prostitutes asshole, Cloverfield Paradox. ), or it could have been stuck in development for a long time, as those films tend to be very slow to release.

But, praise be to lord Cthulhu that this film got dropped from that shitty universe for being off the beaten path, making it just a normal stand alone released movie. No weird Cloverfield tie ins, no pushed back release dates or any stupid stuff like that. Just a plain Jane, normal release. But, trust me, this movie is far from just being normal. So, would you be so kind as to let me rant about how fucking great this movie is now?

Overlord is a mash up of two very, very different film genres being thrown into a blender and made into a strange concoction. (Think Re-Animator meets Saving Private Ryan. Does that make anyone else's nipples erect?) The first half of the movie is a war film following a group of paratroopers on a mission to blow up a nazi occupied radio tower the day before D-day, as to allow the invasion to happen. Very quickly the troopers find themselves in deep shit, with pretty much everything going wrong from the get go. They eventually make it to a small french village, where things get spectacularly weird, creepy and out of place. (Unless you're an inhabitant of a BDSM sex dungeon run by nazi's with a morgue built into it. Then you'll probably feel right at home.)

After arriving, they immediately notice that things are wrong on a different level in the village. Some of the villagers are being taken from their homes in the night, others being gunned down in the streets in front of family members to make them complacent. They collect the corpses of fallen soldiers and villagers, whisking them away to their base. And, to top it off they even torch all of their fallen soldiers bodies quite eagerly. Obviously, all this weird shit prompts the paratroopers to want to figure out what the hell is going on behind the scenes while preparing to assault the tower.

I find it somewhat difficult to really sink my teeth into writing about the movie without spoiling a lot of it. It's hard to review it with a lot of details, because the movie really uses the premise and action to put itself out there. The script for the movie is one of the most solid, tight knit scripts that I've seen used for a movie in years. Seriously, you almost never see that these days. It's just, well, fucking sexy nice. It stays really grounded pretty much all throughout the movie, and nothing ever goes too far/off the rails. I wondered if the movie was going to go the route of silliness like Evil Dead 2 or something. But, no. It takes itself seriously and does it oh so well.

The opening of the film is a typical war action scene (Though it does look pretty good, I especially love how they did the title on screen.), and upon landing the film rears things back and stays pretty quaint while still retaining the war plot points. It slowly builds up to the supernatural parts, and lets the audience soak everything in and keep things from disconnecting. Something which you would assume is quite hard with two totally different types of genre being mashed against one another. They keep things from being bloated with shlock and nonsense, as well as keeping the story very contained. Everything that happens makes sense and has strategy involved. As far as nazi zombie movies go, this shit is top tier A1 quality. EZ clap.

Another unique aspect about this film is how the horror is actually handled. A lot of the creepiness and horror of the film are done via bodily horror. This is why I said it has a Re-animator type of vibe to it, it goes for things in a creepy grotesque way instead of something like The Walking Dead where they rely on tons of gore. The zombies retain their intelligence, are fast moving with super strength and of course are nigh immortal. I honestly really loved how they used the zombies, and really enjoyed the more unique take on them. A good way to describe the zombies and the overall tone of the film is to picture if they made Wolfenstein into a film finally. (But, first we need another 8 Resident Evil films. Because what would life be without 15 god damn Resident Evil films.)

Besides the zombies and horror, the last half of the film has some great action sequences and very entertaining action. It was definitely one of the most fun films that I've watched in the past decade. I loved the cast that they used for the film, most of them are quite random and unknown. It gives it a fresh feeling in a way since you're not sure what to expect. Well, except for one thing. You can expect that pretty much everyone nails their roles. (I especially loved Wyatt Russel playing Snake Plissken Jr essentially. Escape from New York reboot when?)

There is a few small things that I could nit pick on with the film. One such thing is how easily the main character Boyce stumbles across the Nazi laboratories. It's obviously pretty convenient how he ends up there, but at the end of the day is that really that big of a deal? No, not really. There's a few other things like how I wish there was just a few extra more zombies shown/used. But, overall the film is a solid movie with tons of entertainment, fun and scary moments for you to enjoy. I personally put it into my top 3 movies of 2018, and loved it so much I saw it multiple times in the theater while it was available.

I recommend that you give it a chance, as I really can't think of a single thing that would turn someone away from enjoying it. Or, don't. I guess it's fine to be a bunch of soyboy beta cucks who'd rather be eating turnips and watching Two Broke Girls. You bunch of disgusting degenerates.
