Schindler's List

What can one man do?

I first saw this at the cinemas and was glad that I did, back when it was released (1993 I think). It is a powerful movie about what one man was able to do, and essentially save about 1,100 fellow humans from the Nazi gas chambers.

Oskar Schindler may have been a greedy German businessman initially, but as events unfold his good side shines through and he turns his factory into a safe haven for Jews. He is able to keep families together, by showing that he needs the small fingers of the children, to clean inside the smaller bullet casings. He needs the parents to operate the rest of the machinery. He also bribes various officials to keep Jews on his employees list.

While he initially made money with the rise of the Nazis he ultimately ends up broke by the end of the war, bribes do cost money. The more bribes he makes the more people he saves, and he saves as many as he can. However he is still a member of the Nazi party, so when the war ends he is still a criminal.

This is a fairly long film, somewhere around three hours, but it is worth watching and a very powerful film from Spielberg. Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and the rest of the cast show how good their acting can be.
