Kolya (1996) by Jan Sverák (REVIEW)

in #movie5 years ago

Wonderful Czech drama (in Czech language), with a solid dose of fine humor and good background music. Oscar winner of Best Foreign Film in 1996.

The action takes place during the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. Luke is a middle-aged sworn bachelor who survives playing the forehead of funerals and scouring inscriptions on tombstones. But the excessive amount of debts will force him to accept the offer for a fictitious marriage with a young Russian, of course, for a fairly large amount of money, which requires Czech citizenship to immigrate to Germany with her lover.

The problem is that Luke learns about her intention after she is found across the border, leaving behind his 5-year-old son, Kolya, left alone. Luke, the man who never wanted and planned children, is his only hope. There are also inspectors who doubt the legality of marriage.

A family drama in the style of "The Pursuit Of Happyness" (to somewhere), but with a much lighter atmosphere. The little one who plays Kolya is phenomenal and will very easily smile or grieve. In fact, the overall acting in the film is on the level. It's definitely worth seeing, especially for those who are poisonous.
