Domain Movie Review - Reality is in your Head

in #movie5 years ago (edited)

Life on Earth has nearly been wiped out by a deadly virus that has spread like wildfire. 500,000 bunkers have been created to house one person each in an effort to save humanity. These bunkers are hermetically sealed and 100% self contained safe havens for those inside. Grouped in sets of seven, because of science, the survivors are linked via video connections in an effort to keep them sane and their spirits up. After all, they are going to be in these bunkers for a large portion of their remaining lives.

Character traits matter

There are two women and five men linked in the series of bunkers that Domain is focused on. As with most of these movies, these people each represent various character traits from the convenient hacker that finds out information to the annoying jerk that you cannot wait to see gone. In between we have the religious person and characters exhibiting troubles coping with their confinement in the bunkers among other things.

Suspense is the name of the game

If you are not a fan of suspenseful movies then Domain may not be for you. There is suspense pouring out of the edges of the screen here.

Information is doled out sparingly for a reason

There simply is not a lot of it available to the people in the bunkers. They know they are there to attempt to save humanity at a later date when the virus is completely eradicated. The one character that can access the computer networking system is also the leader of the group - convenient plot motivator or just story happenstance?

For what it is worth, there simply is not a lot of information available to the characters. They do not have live feeds to the surface, they do not receive regular updates from a managing government official of any kind. Nothing.

Then weird stuff starts happening

Early on we see the group vote out one of their own who is a self confessed, non-apologetic, murderer and intentional asshole to others. They cut his feed and that is when things start going weird for the group.

We have one character slowly losing his mind due to an apparent malfunction in the electrical system of his bunker leaving the others to worry about his sanity. They eventually have the hacker, known by his home city of Denver, bring back the convict.

Something is wrong

The convict is gone. He is simply not there. Maybe he is hiding in the shower, one of the few areas that the camera cannot see. Nope. No movement there. Then Denver figures out how to access the past video feeds which gives them some insight as to the situation of the felon amid their midst.

His bunker is not secure

This gives the others both hope and fear at the same time. Could they easily just walk out of their bunkers? What would they find? Then more weird stuff occurs and it leaves them facing a dire situation as other characters begin to lose their minds facing their own mortality.

This all seems familiar

Anyone that remembers The Outer Limits television series from the 1990’s will probably have a feeling of deja vu when watching Domain the first time. That is because for the most part, the idea of Domain has been done before - at least in a little more than just passing resemblance.

Both have bunkers

Both Domain and Dead Man’s Switch are set in bunkers but for totally different reasons. While Domain has the characters in the bunkers in an effort to save, well wait a minute maybe they are in the bunkers for the same reason. I mean, Dead Man’s Switch places the various characters in the bunkers in an attempt to save humanity as well.

What is the difference

Well, Domain uses a virus to make humanity take the bunker route while The Outer Limits took the aliens destroying the world. Two totally different reasons but the same end result. Sort of.

That ending, man, what can I say about it?

Nothing. Due to my personal review policy, I stop any content in my reviews at the first half of the movie, I hope it leaves you wanting more and entices you to check out the movie in question. The ending for Domain though, it is worse than you may be thinking. I cannot really say anything else about it without ruining it.

I almost feel bad after watching Domain

I won’t spoil the ending of Domain for you, just suffice to say, it is quite a roller coaster ride to get there. The story is full of suspense and leaves you guessing just what the hell is going on as you go from scene to scene. It is not perfect, there are some stumbles here and there but that is to be expected. For what it is worth, Domain is a fun ride and definitely worth taking.

While there are similarities with that Outer Limits episode, they are still different enough to warrant watching both, just not back to back. If I had to pick one over the other as being better I would have to go with The Outer Limits episode - I am an aliens/sci-fi fan (the second part is why I gave Domain a shot in the first place). Domain is just a good time that plays out with some slow pacing sometimes but that is to be expected when you are dealing with such a limited background to take in.

Where to enjoy Domain

Currently you can watch Domain on Vudu for free, with ads, rent (without ads), or buy it digitally. If you prefer hard copy then check for Domain on eBay or on Amazon.
