Our movie for today is titled:
QUEEN OF KATWEIMG_20180607_113552_936.jpg
Source

Like I said, its a true life story, And I've got this very short clip for you to view before reading... Please watch.

And read...

There's a saying that "The size of your dream must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them"

QUEEN OF KATWE is a story of a young girl of 10 years old, who became an international chess champion. Her name is Phiona Mutesi. This young girl spends most of her days fetching water and hawking and selling maize. She struggles so hard in helping her widowed mother to keep feeding the family and also give keep them sheltered while also keeping her dignity. She helped the family feed themselves, find shelter and survive to see the next day. This story really captures the hardship of people living in a Ugandan slum.

Phiona is not in school because Nakku, her mother couldn't even afford the school uniform, not to talk of the tuition fee. Sometimes, especially nights, Nakku and her four children might all eat and other times, they all go hungry. It was that bad.

Phiona's brother got injured in an accident, and Phiona bribes a motorcyclist to take him to the hospital. The doctor says that they can stitch him up but have nothing to stop the pain while the boy wails in misery. Nakku couldn't help but tell the doctor to proceed, and after the treatment, they all found a way out of the hospital because they don't have any money to pay the medical bill.

They were chased out of their former house because of their inability to pay the house rent and then, Nakku turned an an old church into a house and then, it got flooded, nearly sweeping away her youngest son.

It is fairly clear that Christian faith is woven into the everyday lives of Phiona and even the people around her. Phiona's family prays over their meager dinners, for example and Robert (Couch) also leads prayers before an important chess tournament.

Looking closely at the challenges they face, faith can sometimes be hard. Phiona even sometimes asks her older sister,

Do you think God has forgotten us?

Night, her sister then replies, "I don't think God cares about us in one way or the other," Night turned away from spiritual answers and instead slips into a sinful relationship. The mother furiously said one day

"I can look away," Nakku says, "but God still sees what you do."

We later got to know that Night got pregnant.

All of these kept happening until the day Phiona and her brother discovered a chess club, led by Robert Katende. There were also other kids from Katwe who found a little diversion from their bleak, to have a little fun. Robert Katende, who was also the chess team coach in Phiona's Ugandan neighborhood was also a missionary.

Robert shows an interest in all the children who participate in his Pioneers Chess Club, Phiona is a rare talent and so he loved her greatly.
When Phiona and her brother first get involved with Robert's chess program, a neighbor plants the suspicion in Nakku that there's something untoward happening in the club. "Who knows how they [the chess coaches] use their children?" one of Nakku's friends warns her.

Robert reminds the kids how rewarding it was for him as a teen to beat more affluent kids from the city. He believes that the game can give Katwe's poor sons and daughters a sense of confidence, self-worth and identity, thus becoming a springboard to a better, brighter future for them.
Throughout these critical moments of her young life, Robert was always there to support her, even taking her into his own house for some time. In fact, Robert was more than a father figure to Phiona, helping her begin to see how the strategies she's mastering on the chess board also apply to the game of life.

Robert is lovely as the coach trying to keep the chess team going and fighting to get funding and opportunities while at the same time feeling a responsibility to provide for his own family.
Although Phiona couldn't read or write, He mentors her so well and she got really interested and it's quickly clear that she was meant to play the game. The other kids were always shunning Phiona, and telling her lots of horrible things like; she smell and also calling her a pig. But Phiona won't give in to all that. She returns after having her bath and then, begins learning the game. But Phiona's mother is reluctant to let her daughter chase dreams when there is much work to be done at home.

Nakku worries that chess is all about gambling. And while Robert says that "chess is not gambling," we do see him, in a flashback, winning money in a chess game.

But day after day, step after step. She soon started competing with the club's best players. Then she's beating them. I mean, winning them.

She learnt that:

If a pawn can make it to the end of the board, that piece can be exchanged for another. Also, "In chess, the small one can become the big one"

Phiona determined and really courageous. Life hasn't been kind to her, but she still shows kindness and generosity to others by helping in whatever manner she can to hold her family together. Sure, she lets those mad chess skills of hers go to her head on some occasion but those moments are rare. She gave hope to her entire community.

Now, as I was saying, Phiona was already competing with the club's best players and was already winning them. She was being invited for almost all chess competitions and she won ALL. Even the toughest chess players in other schools and other countries that were more informed and educated, she won them all. Finally she became a champion and the whole community and outsiders celebrated her.

So much happiness

Conclusively,

"Challenges are not a curse." In fact, they may even be blessings. Life for their opponents, has always been relatively easy. But for Phiona? "She was running for her life." And that made her stronger.

We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us

Wow! It was nice staying through to the end of this all exciting and educative movie. I didn't waste my money getting the ticket you know?
Guess what? I learned to play the game of chess the first time yesterday and it was one exciting and challenging time for me but I am glad that I learned after all.
I remember my teacher like Robert stressing that same point you pointed below;

If a pawn can make it to the end of the board, that piece can be exchanged for another. Also, "In chess, the small one can become the big one"

For the pawn, which is the smallest figure, very insignificant in the board, if that insignificant pawn fight against the huddles of the opponent to the other side without minding the fierce appearance of the king, queen, knights, bishop etc, it will sure become the shining star.

A lesson I love to point out here in this epic movie is the place of mentoring. She went that far because she stood on the shoulder of her mentor. A selfless mentor who never minded trading his family welfare and the criticism from people just to see his protege succeed.

Mentorship is that balm that ease the pains we were supposed to face.

I am fired up sweetheart. I can't wait for the next movie to start.

Woooooooow..... This is a bomb dear. I have seen that movie and after that encounter my perspective about a lot of things change.

You usually the game of chess is usually attached to gangs , bahd boys and all that. We for long have been infected with this virus of associating chess to crime, drugs and other vices maybe due to what we have been seeing in certain action movies. And that we the reaction too in the movie when the coach, Mr Robert reached out to those children with the game of chess.

For the first time after seeing that movie i learnt how to play chess and its been amazing how it has helped me improve in so many ways.
That movie is a must watch for those that have not seen it.

Thanks for coming up with this.

I think you show use entertainment as one of your tag for more audience.
