Movie Review: Godzilla: King of the Monsters

in #movies5 years ago

Hi Monster Lovers or should I rather say Kaiju Fans

The King of destruction but also the protector of the planet in this rendition of the character, Godzilla is back in his second big screen adaptation for the Monsterverse and this time his really up against it. The Muto was a nice warm up in the first movie, but this time he has to face a fellow Apex predator and well its Godzillas world we live in the ruble he leaves behind.

I went to check out this movie on Saturday, but I had to give it some thought before I put my review down online, it was sort of a weird play out on screen.

What is Godzilla: King of the Monsters about?

It's been five years since Godzilla showed its face and wrecked the planet and as it would have it, humans were not going just to sit there and let it happen without them ruining it first. So members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch decided to go searching for all these ancient beings which they call Titans.

During their research, they create a tool called the orca that can communicate with these beings and start to wake them up. This ends up in a face-off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

What I thought of Godzilla: King of the Monsters

We see enough movies about humans, this should be focused on the Monsters but they often play on as an afterthought. We buy into the film because we want to see CG monsters, not a family drama, we don't need that kind of back story. Humans should simply be plot devices and ways for us to understand this new world and the impact it has on it, frankly, all humans should be expendable, yet we see this little shits survive impossible odds time and time again.

The movie tends to tease fans too much and with every moment you see the monsters battle, you enter a brief moment of bliss before you are ripped away to deal with people you don't care about doing things you hope they fail at.

The first "clash" occurs in Antarctica, and that scene was actually quite good despite the focus on the humans. You're just now being exposed to these titans duking it out, so having people there witnessing the madness and trying to escape help play into how incredible this event truly is.

By the 3rd act, however, your tolerance has dried up. You don't care about the humans anymore, you want to see this fight play out but the human characters continue to disrupt the fight we want to see like Triple H used to do back in the attitude era of wrestling.

The only "characters" here that need development are the Kaijus. Have them be your stars. Have them be the focus.

There is one exception though and that is the one where Ken Watanabe character, Dr. Ishiro Serizawa sacrifices himself to save Godzilla, in one incredible moment. It makes sense since he always been about how humans and monsters can go exist and gave his life to provide it. In this regard, human interaction was pulled off well and I thought if they could do this more often it would have made the movie so much better.

I'm not saying there should just be mindless action, there can be a story behind it, we can see how humans deal with loss and not being on top of the food chain. We could explore the factions for and against monsters and humans feeble attempt to try and control the outcome, that would be interesting.

But the way it plays out is just useless cannon fodder that the audience couldn't care less about.

My rating for Godzilla: King of the Monsters

These monsterverse movies have not hit their stride in trying to strike a balance between story and action. Its just one of those cases where the style will trump substance and substance is being forced down our throats, but it doesn't work well.

It's an okay watch if just for the visuals and the destruction if you can get past the non-existent plot and aim to enjoy seeing big ass monsters break stuff then this movie will make your Saturday night if not, give it a miss. I'd give it 5 Kaijus out of 10

Have your say

More movie reviews by me

Sort:

Sadly Godzilla movies tend to suck so they are way down my list to watch. The franchise could be great but they just can't figure out how to do it. I watch them all once they are free rentals from the library, but each time sit there thinking why did they do it this way.

I agree with you, they try too hard to try and add additional elements when all we want is to see Godzilla do his thing and duke it out with other Kaiju! That’s what makes the franchise great, I’ve yet to see a western studio take Godzilla and use it properly! I doubt they will stop though it’s still very much a money spinner even if it fails

This review hit all my sensibilities about how I judge movies. I'm gonna have to go look at your Shazaam review now because I've been on the fence about watching it.
Good work, my man.

Thanks man, glad someone took the time to read it and found value in my rant! Now if someone at studios could read it and come up with a solid Godzilla movie that would be great!

If you do check it out or Shazam let me know what you thought of either

The review you made is great. Everything is in it. About the film, its history and your opinion.

It was a pleasure to read it. You are right to pimp this one.
