Best friends on the big screen

So here I am with another Movie list. The thing I like the most about listing is that we can include different sides of a same subject and we can put on the list something for everyone. Today I'm gonna talk about movies that celebrate friendship. I'm not saying these are the best friendship movies 'cause there are so many more. These are just my favorites among the movies I can remmeber now. If I think of any other I will let you know on the comments.

Childish friendship

I'm not using the word childish like silly or immature, I'm talking about friendship between Kids. Of course we can talk about a lot of movies here but I'm gonna rescue two. The first one is Stand by me from 1986. It's a classic movie based on a Stephen King's story about four teenagers and their adventure of looking for a missing boy. Playing at being heroes, the intelligent Cornie, the rude and sentimental Chris, the extravagant Teddy and the fearful Vern enter a hostile environment in which they must fend for themselves.

These kids make a special team because all four of them are so different from each other and that's one of the main things about any good friendship: we don't have to be so alike to become good friends. Another story about different kids becoming friends is the tragic film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The life of Bruno, a german 8 years old boy, changes when he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the fence that separates Bruno's house from the Nazi concentration camp Shmuel lives in. The way these innocent kids become friends, in spite of the fence, the war, the world, is a powerful message and the story's ending is one of the saddest of the last years.

My friend is an animal

I know when you first read the title of this post you inmediatly thought in one movie, so let's get over with it. Hachi: A Dog's Tale is a remake of the Japanese film Hachiko monogatari (1987) directed by Seijirô Kôyama and based on the true story of a dog so faithful to its owner that he went every day to wait for him at the train station, even after the death of his master. If you didn't almost cry with this movie let me tell you: you don't have a heart. In that line of men becoming friends with their animals, I also remember Steven Spielberg's War horse , where Albert and Joey (the horse) must fight against obstacles, a war, an auction, other owners, over the years, until they meet again and recognize themselves in a memorable and quite emotional scene. From these two movies we can learn that a friend can be found anywhere and that some times animals turn out to be more human than people.

Strong women

The movie The Help based on Kathryn Stockett's novel is the story about a group of black women who have spent their lives in the service of large families suffering all forms of racial discrimination. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer lead this group of women who, tired of so much abuse, come to commit acts of rebellious memorable (like that delicious cake we all remember) and manage to stay together as a single force in adverse times. But if we talk about women and friendship, there's an amazing couple that gotta be at number one everytime: Thelma and Louise.

Thelma Dickinson, an empty-lived housewife is married to a detestable cretin who treats her like a child. For her part, Louise Sawyer works as a waitress in a coffee shop and dreams of her boyfriend marrying her. One weekend they decide to take a trip together to get away from the deadly routine of their lives and all their frustrations. However, the getaway, which promised to be fun and, above all, liberating, ends up being an experience full of dramatic episodes in an unforgettable classic road movie. These movies teach us that women (and all people) are strong, but together, they are stronger. Friendship gives us power 'cause we can do so much more when we can count on someone.

In the hard times

Here's another Stephen King's story: Shawshank redemption tells the story of Andy, sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, is sent to Shawshank prison and over the years wins the respect of Red and establishes a sincere friendship that lasts beyond the prison walls. The recent Green Book (Best picture in this year's Academy Awards) tells the story of Tony and Shirley, two people who will have to face racism and prejudice, but to which destiny will unite, forcing them to put aside differences to survive and prosper in the journey of their lives. And another great movie with a friendship in the hard times is Untouchable. Philippe, a millionaire aristocrat who has remained a quadriplegic, hires Driss as a home carer, an immigrant from a slum just out of jail. Although, at first glance, does not seem the most appropriate person, the two end up achieving Vivaldi and Earth Wind and Fire, eloquence and hilarity, tuxedos and tracksuits. Two confronting worlds that, little by little, congenial to forge a friendship so crazy, fun and solid as unexpected, a unique relationship in its kind that sparks jump. No doubt, these films highlight the importance of friendship when we have to live difficult situations or periods in our lives, when a true friend says you are not alone.

The greatest friendships in animated films

On Ralph Breaks the Internet, Ralph and his friend Vanellope will have to play everything by traveling through the networks in search of a spare piece that saves Sugar Rush, Vanellope's videogame. We met them at Wreck it Ralph but in this second movie we can see a few interesting things in their frienship. Vanellope is Ralph's best friend so he wants to be with her always, he becomes needy, overprotective and anxious that she does something that doesn't include him. It is a problem of self-esteem that affects the relationship, so what this movie says is we're friends, but we both have a life apart.

Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman widower and Russell, an eight-year-old explorer and bomb-proof optimism, has one of the funniest friendships in film history. And the highlight is that at the beginning, Mr. Fredricksen tries to get away from Russel, he is sullen, impolite and denies Russell's help, but the boy remains firm in helping him and manages to melt the wall of ice that has surrounded the heart of Carl after the death of his wife. The lesson of Up is that we must open ourselves to new friendships, we can not live in anger with the world. There are many movies in which a constant rivalry becomes a great friendship, but none is as iconic as Andy's toys in Toy Story. When Woody, a cowboy who has been Andy's favorite toy, is relegated to the background by Buzz Lightyear, a space hero endowed with all kinds of technological advances, begins one of the most representative sagas of what friendship is, where we can sing You've got a friend in me.

Forrest and Bubba, Marlin and Dory, the Golden trio, the teenagers from The perks of being a wallflower, the ladies from The sisterhood of the traveling pants and many more films show the value of a good friendship and we all know that finding a friend is finding a treasure. Which is your favourite friendship movie? and what's your best friend's favourite? text him/her and spent the afternoon watching some of these films to thank him/her for being there for you.
